Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Dogs say "woof-woof," right? Not in Korean they don't ("mung-mung"). Take a trip around the world with this clever international guide to animal noises. Each spread presents a smorgasbord of sounds little ones will enjoy imitating. Older kids will delight in trying to guess the animal. Lift the flap to see whimsical illustrations of, for instance, a purple circus horse ("ee-ha-ha" in Polish). (Ages birth to 2)

Children's Literature
Mung-mung is what young Korean children imagine dogs say. The premise of this book is much superior to its realization. The book explores the common childhood names for familiar animals throughout the world. Chinese children hear a pig say hoo-loo. In Poland horses say ee-ha-ha. First there is a double-page spread that asks the question, "What kind of animal says this?" Five different phrases are supplied and underneath the full-page fold-under flap the proper animal appears in imaginative and vivid settings. The problems arise on the double-page spreads that have few illustrations and consist primarily of five simple phrases in five different languages. To fill the space, the lettering of all the phrases is conceived of as art in different styles and colors which a young child would have great difficulty reading for himself; and the print under the phrases describing the source language, is so small it, too, is difficult to read. 2004, Charlesbridge, Ages 5 to 8.

PreS-A multilingual guessing game for the youngest children. Each spread begins with the question, "What kind of animal says-" and features a variety of sounds in playful handwritten typefaces. Opening a flap reveals the answer. Several languages from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are included, as well as the sound in English to tip off youngsters. Bigda's cotton-candy-colored gouache artwork displays a lightness of line and a jazzy, free-form feel that blends well with the simple fare. The pages of onomatopoeic sounds are bright and artful (at least to someone able to read them) but young audiences may wiggle impatiently to open the flaps. Hank De Zutter's Who Says a Dog Goes Bow-Wow? (Dell, 1997) covers the same theme in a more straightforward and linear approach. Pair Park's fun title with Miriam Schlein's Hello, Hello! (S & S, 2002), a book on animal communication, or Manya Stojic's greetings in 42 languages in Hello World (Scholastic, 2002).-Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
"What kind of animal says "Mung-Mung, BoBo, Gav-Gav, Wow-Wow," or "Woof-Woof?" Fold out the page to find it's a dog. Successive gatefolds hide farm or household animals, but the onomatopoeic words from their mouths come from languages as diverse as Korean, Turkish, Swedish, and Hindi. This has much in common with "Who Says a Dog Goes Bow-Wow?," by Hank De Zutter (1993). Suse MacDonald's illustrations echoed Eric Carle for that one and they were the highlight. Here, Newbery-winner Park's text is important but not too exciting. Bidga's lightly lined, pastel illustrations are beautiful and surprisingly lively, full of interesting type faces for each of the words and accompanied by tiny, but clear labels for the language of each. Not all toddlers will grasp the concept of different languages, but all will enjoy guessing what animal comes next. And it'll have them nuff-nuffing all the way home. (Picture book. 2-7)

What a great book!!! I love the artwork. It really brings a new view of how the rest of the world hears animal sounds.

    What a great book!

What a great way to open kids minds about how other people around the world perceive how animals sound. I love the illustrations too!

    Cute Concept, Poor Execution

What a neat idea! The concept that animals 'speak' differently in different languages might be a little hard for a toddler to grasp, but is fun and interesting nonetheless. However, the illustrations and page layout are such that the text is lost. There's nowhere for the reader's eye to rest, and certainly none of the bold, immidiately visible and easily identifiable images that small children delight in.
