Overview

This book is for anyone who wants to learn how to use Visual
Basic .NET for developing business applications.

5 WAYS THE CONTENT GIVES YOU A PROFESSIONAL START

If you're a beginner, you'll learn how to code, test, and debug
object-oriented Visual Basic programs in the first seven chapters. That's
section 1 of this book, and no other book gets you started that fast with
such a wide range of skills.

In section 2, you'll learn how to develop graphical user interfaces at a
professional level. This includes the use of common controls, multi-document
interfaces, and GUI enhancements like menus, toolbars, and help information.

In section 3, you'll learn how to use the .NET classes to work with dates,
strings, arrays, collections, structures, files, and XML. You'll also learn
the skills you need for object-oriented programming. These are the
programming skills that every professional should have.

In section 4, you'll learn how to use ADO.NET and the disconnected data
architecture of the .NET platform to develop database applications with
bound controls, queries, and parameterized queries. Although there's a lot
more to database programming than that, this will get you off to a terrific
start.

In section 5, you'll learn how to develop web applications and create and
use web services. Here again, there's a lot more to web programming than
that, but this will get you started right.

4 WAYS OUR INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH INSURES YOUR SUCCESS

To help you learn how to develop applications at a professional level, this
book presents 18 business applications as examples. That way, you can see
the relationships between the Visual Basic code, objects, properties,
methods, and events that an application requires, which is essential to your
understanding. In contrast, most competing books present trivial
applications that have little resemblance to applications in the real world,
and that limits your learning potential.

To solidify your skills, the exercises at the end of each chapter guide you
through the development of some of the book's applications. They also
encourage you to experiment and challenge you to apply what you've learned
in new ways. To give you a maximum amount of practice in a minimum amount of
time, you start many of these exercises from partial applications that you
download from our web site.

To help you learn more by reading less, all of the information in this book
is presented in "paired pages" with the essential syntax, guidelines, and
examples on the righthand page and the perspective and extra explanation on
the left. Programmers tell us how much they like this approach because it
lets them quickly find what they're looking for. This is particularly useful
for a language like Visual Basic because you simply can't remember the
hundreds of details that are required for effective programming.

After you read the first section of this book plus chapter 8, you can read
the chapters in section 2, 3, 4, or 5. In other words, you don't have to
read all 20 chapters in sequence. We refer to this as "modular
organization," and it lets you get the training you need when you need it.
Yes, there are some contingencies between some of the chapters, but we let
you know about them whenever they're critical.

    Excellent

I was in several Oracle's trainning classes. In most classes, the class takes approximatly from two to five days. If you were in the class, you will get a Handout book that prints from Instructor's Powerpoint slide. The handout, in bullet format, covers only the closed-to-a-real application examples. It concises. Instructor covers the slide for 30 min and then he gave you many lab excercises. You follows those excercises. With this method, I think you can understand the context in the short time. This book is using the same method. But you do not need the real instructor. The instracutor suggestions already are in the book. At the end of each chapter, you will have a chance to modify the project that you already did in the chapter. For example, if the author shows you how to do the if statements, you will have a chance to modify that statements to be more complex. You also have chance to do extra projects that the author hasnot taught in the text. As a result, you can apply those skill to develop your own projects. Another good thing about this book is that the screen captures are very clear. You can see what the points of the author. In many books, they fail because readers can not read the letters on the capture screen. Before you decide to buy Object-Oriented Text Book, I suggest that you should check the example that it explaint to you. You should buy the book that shows you an example like a real world example such as Invoice Class, or DataValidation Class. You should not buy the book that shows you mammal class, Engine Class, or Dog Class. However, for the list price, it seems to me that this book is a little pricy. You can buy a similar book with 1,000+ pages more for 50 dollars. You may need to trade off between the price and the presentation method of the book.

    Unbelievable!!!

Ms. Prince has a way of packing a lot of valuable knowledge into just a few words. This book lays out the big picture, as well as the mechanics, in very simple straight-forward terms. It allows you to see how everything fits together. Also, there are numerous helpful tips that will make the coding process easier. Thanks for publishing such an excellent work.

    The BEST for starting VB.Net

Murach's Beginning Visual Basic.NET by Anne Prince is by far the best book on the market for us beginners! Had I bought this book first, I would have saved myself lots of dollars and several months time. This is a job well done! Anne has selected a terrific range of material and presented it in a sequence and method that is perfectly suited for beginners. Starting with the basics of the Visual Studio development environment right on thru the coding of windows and web-based database applications, you'll learn how to produce real-world solutions. She starts each topic from the beginning, with code samples and their clear and concise explanations written on the same, or facing page. Thus this book is easier to learn from than any other programming book I have worked with. Each new topic requires only previous topics to understand. You don't have to jump chapters ahead to search for references on the current topic. Such a logical progression builds the reader's confidence, avoids frustration, and saves time. Solutions to the end-of-chapter exercises require both a review of the topic lessons and some user creativity; just the right mixture of confidence building and mental challenge. And the additional downloadable problems offer more mental workout. Whenever I emailed Anne for help, she quickly responded with articulate solutions to my inquiries. I've read plenty of programming books..............cursed at, and wondered why I bought many of them! This is the only one that I feel so good about that I'm willing to take the time to write a signed review.

    Great tool for beginners

Just as Murach's beginner's guide to VB classic was truly the best way to learn VB, so is this book worthy of being called the successor to the throne. In fact, the way both books teach you are very similar. Murach has kept the best single innovation for beginners - paired page formatting. What this means is that if you open the book to any given page, on the left side you'll see text on some programming technique, on the right side will be an image with graphical illustration describing what you just read. This method helps the newbie avoid getting lost in the jargon. Another cool thing about this book that sets it apart from other "for newbiew" titles is that you actually learn how to write business apps. So it saves you at least a bit of aggravation. Anyway, you'll learn the following: how to build user interfaces for either web or winforms, including menus, toolbars, treeviews, etc¿, how to create classes, work with XML and other attributes of programming, like dates, strings, arrays, collections, structures, files, folders, etc¿. Then, you'll read about database programming, ADO.NET, bound controls, queries. Don't skim on this one. The book also has solid chapters on ASP.NET applications, web services. Keep in mind you'll have a ton of fully coded actual business applications to look at and compare. Just this alone should hike your programming potential. Anyway, if you are looking to get into programming or you are a newbie to medium programmer, this is the one.
