Overview

Returning from a party late one night, chef Sunny McCoskey is the first to discover the body of a murdered woman left outside a local winery, and she may even have witnessed the killer driving away.

Thrust into the center of a crime that has rattled the tranquil Napa Valley, Sunny pursues her own investigation, a journey that takes her from Northern California's wine country to the insular houseboat community along the San Francisco Bay. Uncovering a tangle of secret liaisons, Sunny closes in on the murderer, who responds with one more desperate act.

With Murder Alfresco, author Nadia Gordon again takes us into the heart of the food and wine culture of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, and introduces us to an array of irreverent characters. As the Los Angeles Times said, "Sunny is a welcome, energetic heroine. . . . She and her pals are fun to be around."

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
When chef McCoskey finds a woman fettucine al dead-o, she and her colorful friends romp through the vineyards and restaurants of wine country to find the killer in the third of the series. Gordon lives in San Francisco. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Escaping her glamorous boyfriend's party in the early hours of the morning, Chef Sunny McCoskey (Death by the Glass, 2003) finds strange fruit hanging on a tree in the peace and quiet of Vedana Vineyards. Some psycho has killed pretty young Heidi Romero and tied her corpse in a la shibari Japanese bondage fetish. The ghost of the victim haunts Sunny, who investigates despite Sergeant Steve Harvey's stern warning. She and sous chef Rivka Chavez meet an aging surfer named Joel Hyder who claims to be Heidi's ex. After stepping over the crime scene tape on the victim's Sausalito houseboat, they sun themselves and sip champagne but find nothing suspicious except for Hyder. Then winemaker Wade Skord and Rivka conscript Sunny to crash a dinner for classic Ferrari collectors and, voila, they're sharing a table with Vedana Vineyards owners Bruce and Kimberly Knolls. Spectacularly beautiful Kimberly is resentful of Sunny's interest in the corpse hanging from their tree. Her displeasure becomes obvious when she interrupts Sunny cleaning out a grease trap with serious brand-name intimidation. Sunny eventually serves up the killer and avoids becoming either the next work of bondage art or a vegetarian who'll never look at meat again. Gordon walks a fine line between indulging food fetishes and providing glimpses into the sometimes brutal art of cuisine.

    Disappointing

I was hoping for a good murder mystery with a splash of wine country culture, histury, trivia, etc. The story dragged in places that added nothing to the book. Sort of wwent off on a tangent. There was little mentioned about wine country or the vineyard except for the setting of a few scenes, no one seemed to be drinking good wine on a regular basis. The main character disappointed me in her continued stupid actions. I don't want to give away any of the plot. So I will say that I would like my main characters to have more common sense. I would not read another from this author.

    I Also Recommend:

    Sunny Delight

I attended a workshop where the author spoke and purchased a book--glad I did. I'm even happier that Sunny McCoskey is a series. A delight. Kind of Agatha Christie meets the Food Network. Smart and tasty.

    Good.

After reading this I would like to read the first two books. Sunny seems obsessed with finding a killer. She is fortunate to survive. I can't always figure out who the killer is, but this time I did.
