Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Give Dennis credit for coming up with perhaps the unlikeliest sleuth ever to tackle an impossible crime, and for setting the whole affair in locked bathroom on a tour bus. Betty Chance is in her fifties and struggling to make ends meet after a perfect storm of painful developments. Her husband left her for "an older, fatter woman" who could cover his gambling losses and, in addition to feelings of be-trayal, her ex- left her his debts which gutted their savings. After a year, Chance manages to pull her-self together to start a business, Take A Chance Tours, which runs gambling junkets. One such routine trip, to Moose Bay, Minnesota, turns deadly when one of her passengers is found stabbed to death in the vehicle's lavatory. When her driver—an ex-con who improbably served a full 10 years for an acci-dental convenience store stickup—becomes the prime suspect, Chance turns Jessica Fletcher to exon-erate her. There's nothing memorable about the characters, the prose, or the plot, and the attempts at injecting humor won't work for all readers. (Mar.)
Lois Greiman
Buffet Betty gives you more bang for your buck. Fun, fast, and furious, Murder by Chance is one heck of a ride.

HILARIOUS, FUN-FILLED, AND HIGHLY ENTERTAINING!Three single wome

HILARIOUS, FUN-FILLED, AND HIGHLY ENTERTAINING!Three single women venture out on a new mission through their new travel business, specializing in casino junkets. Are they against all odds, after a dead body is discovered in a tour bus? Betty Chance, a fifty year old woman who is divorced, unemployed and facing hardship, decides to open-up 'Take A Chance Tours' with her niece. Their new company specializes in gaming destinations, and Betty becomes good friends with the bus driver, who is an ex-con. As soon as the bus arrives at Moose Lake Bay Resort, Betty and Tillie discover the body of a three-hundred and fifty pound corpse, stabbed in the back. Betty sets out on her own mission to find the killer as Tillie and Lori offer their assistance. Does the crime get resolved, and who was the killer? Will justice be served, and will these three women be able to keep the business booming? Pat Dennis delivers an extremely funny story, combined with mystery, which entertains from beginning to end. After moving to Arizona and visiting the casinos, I could not possibly imagine three women of different ages, finding themselves in the middle of a three-ring-circus. The author has you laughing-out-loud at times in this funny adventure ride. The story gets better-and-better the more you read, trying to imagine the incredible mess they got themselves into."Murder By Chance" is a roller-coaster ride of fun, mystery, and entertainment. In addition, along with your reading pleasure, the author includes delicious, delightful recipes. I am anxious to try the New Orleans Bread Pudding, and the Maple Walnut Pumpkin Pie. The experience of enjoying a fun read, then given mouth-watering recipes is one of pure pleasure. Highly recommended! This is my first read from comedian Pat Dennis with thanks to 40 Press, for introducing me to this author's work. I find Pat Dennis a unique and fascinating writer, and as funny as Phyllis Diller. There were moments during this read that I felt like I was watching an episode of 'I Love Lucy.' I will indeed be searching for more from this award-winning author.
