This book is laugh out loud funny! It's easy to read and very entertaining. The characters are hysterical, especially Agnes. and the main character, Nora Lassiter, is also very funny. She is a realistic investigator and can sometimes be just as clueless as any other regular person going into this situation would be. To me, that made her all the more entertaining and fun to read about. Her inner monologue was sometimes very sarcastic and funny. It was interesting getting to see inside of her head. Her relationships with other characters felt real to me. In books like this, ones where relationships with other people isn't integral to the main plot, sometimes feel forced and thrown in. This isn't the case at all in this book. The setting and the characters made this story all the more interesting. It was very, very funny and I recommend it for any mystery lovers or anyone looking for an easy, funny read!

I just finished this book. It was thoroughly enjoyable - great cast of characters - an easy laugh-out-loud read. All I can say, is "Stephanie Plum watch your six - Nora is hot on your tail - she may even be quirkier and have even more bumbling human traits that my favorite goofy sleuth. Looking forward to those Pomeranians?" and, how bout that "hunk" - still have the hot's for Ranger though...but only time will tell!
Bernadine Fagan has a winner here.

WATCH OUT JANET EVANOVICH. BERNADINE FAGAN IS ON THE SCENE WITH "MURDER BY THE OLD MAINE STREAM", THE FIRST OF (HOPEFULLY) A LONG SERIES OF "NORA LASSITER" MYSTERIES. FAGAN HAS GOT IT ALL TOGETHER WITH PLOT, CHARACTERS AND A LOT OF COVER TO COVER FUN. THIS IS A 5 STAR WINNER AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT IN THE SERIES.

Nora Lassiter is a complex combination of seeming contradictory traits expertly packaged up into a delightful character you won't soon forget. And she's not the only character in this fast paced, fun mystery you'll love. This is one of those books you won't want to take to the doctor's office -- it's laugh out loud funny, and you'll miss your appointment because you won't want to put it down. Can't wait to read more by Ms. Fagan!

This is the best book I've read in a long time. The characters were fun and loveable, especially Nora the main character. She got herself into such funny situations. Made me laugh out loud. The three aunts were entertaining. I wish I knew people like them. Good story too. Lots of twists and turns. The ending was a surprise. Perfect ending.

Overview
If ever a woman was not cut out for life in a backwoods town in Maine it's chic city woman Nora Lassiter. If ever there was a misunderstanding about what a woman does for a living, the very idea that Nora could be a "hotshot New York detective" takes the cake. But when she stumbles upon a body in the woods, and her uncle becomes the prime murder suspect, Nora’s plans to return to New York City are put on hold and she becomes an amateur sleuth determined to catch the murderer and clear her uncle. There is humor in this book. You may even find yourself laughing out loud.
