Note: NO animals are harmed in this romp through the backwoods!

On opening day of bear hunting season in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a game warden is murdered right under Little Donny's tree stand. Little Donny disappears into the backwoods, forcing sixty-six-year-old Gertie to use her "unique" investigative techniques to find her favorite grandson. Gertie's search is hampered by her pin-curled bodyguard Kitty, her man-hungry friend Cora Mae, and Grandma Johnson-who should be mushing peas between her new false teeth in the Escanaba nursing home instead of setting up camp at Gertie's place. To top it off, Gertie's son Blaze, the local sheriff, seems more concerned with arresting his mom for cruising down Highway M35 without a driver's license than finding Little Donny or catching the killer.

The Stephanie Plum of the geriatric set is back in Deb Baker¿s sequel to Murder Passes the Buck. Having decided to create her own (unlicensed) investigative agency ¿The Trouble Busters,¿ widow Gertie Johnson acquires the auctioned-off, vandalized sheriff¿s truck (that sheriff is Gertie¿s son and that she was the vandalizer is another story) and arms herself with a trusty bag of weapons that includes a taser, cattle prod, mace, and handcuffs. What she¿s not ready for is the body that is discovered near a hunting blind with the main suspect being her favorite ¿ and missing ¿ grandson. While her son is determined to keep her off the roads (Gertie never managed to learn how to drive or get a license), Gertie sets out to prove Little Donny¿s innocence with a posse that includes her single and predatory best friend Cora Rae, the police dog that Gertie unintentionally managed to get fired, and her self-proclaimed bodyguard Kitty. Once again Ms. Baker has created a hilarious mystery that whips along to a dramatic finish. Gertie is plagued with family members who hinder her as much as they help, yet her love for them always shines through. Moments of laugh-out-loud humor are balanced by Gertie¿s vulnerability as she battles to protect her grandson and ferret out a murderer by following the clues that her son ignores. This Yooper Mystery series continues to grow stronger and readers will be eager for Gertie¿s next appearance.

The entire series is a treasure! Hilarious moments abound but there is much more in this series. The story is about a sixty six year old widow taking her life back on her terms. She spent five years grieving and always will to a degree but her life is not over yet. She is one stubborn and single minded woman, much to the despair of her son, the soon to retire sheriff. Try it and enjoy!

I have found all Deb Baker's murder mysteries to be hard to put down. This one was also that way. I wish there were more of them.

I found this book really anoying and sometimes offencive and demeaning. Comments made that were supose to add humor and detail were redundant and honestly i found myself wishing someone would indeed lock that rediculous old lady away.....

Gertie is a great character, full of unexpected adventures. She loves her family and her friends with their quirky ways. These stories make me want to visit the UP. Glad, too for the recipes at the end of the book.

I love these mysteries. They are funny and the circumstances are fairly unique (usually hunting is involved). I would have given it 5 stars but there are some typos and I know some readers would be annoyed by them. However, the story is worth tolerating a few mistakes.

Gertie Johnson is a 66 year old widow, mother, grandmother and a new PI. When Gertie gets the help of her friend Cora Mae it is like Lucy and Ethel aged and move to Michigan's Upper Peninsula . It is bear hunting season and more people than bears are getting killed. So Gertie, Cora Maw and another cohort Kitty set out to solve the mystery and the results are something you must read. Deb Baker writes Gertie so well I can almost see and hear her. This book is so delightful and funny. Reading in bad last night I laughed so much I woke my husband. Now he wants to read this cozy.

There were parts of this I enjoyed more than the first book. I liked how the story seemed to focus more on the case rather than the crazy antics Gertie always managed to get herself into. At least this time, her craziness was tied into the case. This one didn't make me giggle as much as the first book. However, it was still a fun read.
