Overview

When beautiful French actress Sabine Durand mysteriously disappears, Rex Graves flies to the Caribbean paradise of St. Martin to investigate. But no one told the Scottish barrister that the island's white sand beaches would be filled with people walking around starkers. Apparently, Sabine was staying at an exclusive nudist resort. Not even a few pints of Guinness can prepare Rex for all the brazenly exposed body parts he encounters.

Keeping his gaze well above the shoulders, Rex interviews Sabine's friends. It seems everyone has something to hide—from her rich older husband to the sexy self-made millionaire to Monsieur Bijou, an influential developer on the island with a fetish for jewels. Alibis unravel and motives are revealed as Rex works to uncover the culprit of this crime au naturel.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
A Scotsman averts his eyes at a Caribbean nudist enclave. His friends the Winslows (Christmas is Murder, 2008) spare no expense in flying Rex Graves, QC, to La Plage d'Azur, a posh resort in St. Martin, in hopes that he can solve the disappearance of alluring Sabine Durand, who's been missing for a week. The only clues she's left behind are her ankle bracelet, a bloodied sarong and her husband's cell phone, abandoned near some jagged rocks. The gendarmes suspect foul play by sharks, but Graves concentrates instead on a Texas cattle-and-oil man, a wealthy playboy, a reconstructive surgeon, a banker, an Irish lush and a nudist resort developer. He also suspects Vernon, the husband Sabine reportedly cuckolded, until he turns up dead. Applying sun lotion to parts best left unmentioned, Graves gets down to the bare facts of the case, which include facts the Winslows did not confide in him, and dispatches from Interpol associates who alert him to two other crimes on the island involving beauties like Sabine. The most untitillating nudist company imaginable. Put your clothes on and run to the bookstore for something else.

ANOTHER "WINNER" (Starred BOOKLIST review for "Christmas is Murder")

Fast-paced mystery set in the French West Indies, featuring Scots barrister-sleuth Rex Graves, who is astonished to find himself investigating a case at an exclusive nudist resort, whence a young actress goes missing. International cast of characters and surprising twists along the way. "Murder in the Raw" is very tame in spite of the nudism. Great beach or commuter read.

    A Modern Traditional Mystery

When Scottish advocate Rex Graves arrives in St Martin at an all-expense paid invitation to investigate the disappearance of actress Sabine Durand, he receives two bits of disturbing news. First, his luggage has not arrived. Second, though, this shouldn't be a problem since the resort is "clothing optional." Not only does Rex have to interrogate the guests of the hotel - the men who all mourn Susanne's loss and the women who seem indifferent - he has to do so while avoiding looking down at the many bits and pieces.
The island police are content to write off Sabine's disappearance to sharks at the behest of the wealthy developer, a man who owns both the police and much of the island and who also has suspicious ties to Amsterdam sex clubs and their prostitutes who had a habit of getting murdered. Rex himself has his own distractions, namely the disappearance of his girlfriend in Iraq and whose humanitarian aid takes priority in her life.
At less than 200 pages, Murder in the Raw moves swiftly along and speeds to an ending with Challinor tossing in a few surprises. What is so enjoyable about this mystery are the diverse characters, from the Texas oilman and his inflated wife who hides an Ivy League education to Rex's roommate, a rich, dashing, adventurous millionaire. The one disappointment is that we aren't able to learn more about the guests who are all entertaining and likable but many in their number. Rex Graves himself is a stellar lead character who in the style of the traditional mystery questions each suspect yet unexpectedly has a daring confrontation with the killer. This is a highly entertaining, humorous, completely engaging mystery. - Cindy Chow

    Mystery + Drama + Romance

Another charming offering from C. S. Challinor. I got hold of an early review copy and was not disappointed. The story would have held up even if it did not take place mostly in a nudist enclave for the rich and famous, but this gives an added dimension to the proceedings :) Super-cozy mystery, delightful sleuth, tight plotting, surprising twists, interesting characters, and exotic local color. Long may this series continue.
