Meet the Author

Joshua Hammer grew up in New York City, attended Princeton University, and spent 15 years as a foreign correspondent and bureau chief for Newsweek magazine, based, successively, in Nairobi, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Berlin, Jerusalem, and Cape Town. A Nieman Fellow at Harvard University from 2004 to 2005, Hammer left Newsweek the following year and became a freelance writer, based in Berlin. He is a contributing writer and editor for Smithsonian magazine and a contributing editor for Outside. He writes regularly for The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Fast Company, Atlantic Monthly, and other publications. He is the author of three books, including Chosen by God, a finalist for the 2000 Los Angeles Times Book Prize; A Season in Bethlehem; and Yokohama Burning.
