this series is one i never want to miss a story of. the author has a very good understanding of the way life was in the 'gaslight' era. the settings are well described, the manner in which people conducted themselves is written so you cannot misunderstand the way life was in the early days of America. sarah brandt is a midwife, but also the daughter of a leading family of new york. she married a doctor and her family was horrified. there was a period of estrangement. she met frank malloy, a new york detective sergeant, and has helped him in the past with solving murders. this story deals with a murder in the uppercrust of new york. her father asks frank to investigate which is not the norm. not to necessarily to bring the person to justice if they are of the uppercrust, just to see who did it. adding to the fact that asking frank to investigate, he also asks his daughter to help. no one can figure out why, because this just isn't done. maybe it's a kind of test? or is her father mellowing becaujse she has feelings for frank and vice versa? these stories are intelligently written and the knowledge of the era outstanding. the characters are described so clearly. when i see victoria has a new story out i put stars all around the news so i can be sure to get it and be first in line to do so. love this series!!!!!

Ms. Thompson is a wonderful writer. It is hard not to read her book as fast as possible in order to go onto the next one. Have really enjoyed the Gaslight Series.

Thin on plot depth but fun nonetheless these books are super quick reads and very superficial. But the characters are likeable and the story moves along well.

I'm always so glad when the bad guy gets what he deserves. However, the book was not predictable, and it was worth the reading.

I enjoyed this book so much....I couldn't put it down and finished it in 3 days!!
The story- A gentleman is found dead at his club. It seems as if he died in his sleep. But once the body is moved, it is realized that he had been stabbed in the back and slowly bled to death.
This is a great story/mystery about how one wealthy man can have many enemies ....
This story builds well and quickly. The characters have all developed well throughout this series and finally all come together to solve this mystery! So many twists and turns...it keeps you guessing!
Very enjoyable! If you haven't read this series before, I would recommend you start! I believe this is one of the best mysteries that I have read this year!
As usual, Victoria has written a very interesting and colorful new mystery. Always love to see just where Sara and Frank go in solving crime. Nice to see the focus more on Frank this time around and how he is beginning to become better acquainted with Mr. Decker. Can't wait to the next one!
