"When Sarah finagles an interview with one of the city's most prestigious law firms, no one thinks she has a prayer of being hired. Except Sarah. Using her brains and a little subterfuge, she not only manages to become the firm's newest (and only female) associate attorney, she also acquires her first client - a lovely young society matron suspected of brutally stabbing to death her wealthy but abusive husband. Sarah is sure of her client's innocence, but the revelation of the woman's secret lover may make that innocence impossible to prove." When four more victims fall prey to the killer's knife, Sarah fears she has bitten off more than she can chew. Bucking her boorish employer and the judicial system, Sarah finds herself embroiled in shady legal maneuvers, a daring Chinatown raid, and a secret and very scandalous sex club in this blend of history, romance, and murder.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
San Francisco of 1880 comes alive in this mystery featuring Sarah Woolson, a young woman determined to practice law in a man's world. Snatching her first client from under the nose of Joseph Shepherd, senior partner of a prestigious law firm, Sarah insinuates herself into a job. Her client, a wealthy young widow, soon needs more than help recovering funds from her husband's estate when she is arrested and jailed for his gruesome murder. Soon Sarah's investigations link to three more murders and discoveries of chicanery on the Comstock Lode, white slavery, and a mysterious tontine amounting to more than $200,000. From the opera and society parties to Chinatown, from missions to the waterfront stews and opium dens, a determined Sarah pursues the perpetrator of a series of murders she is convinced are connected. Well researched and nicely paced, Tallman's first mystery is enjoyable; Anna Fields reads well, even though her dramatic style may not appeal to everyone. Recommended for all fiction collections.-Janet Martin, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Pinehurst, NC Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
It's a wonder the ERA still hasn't passed, considering all the proto-feminist sleuths turning up in American historical fiction. Sarah Woolson, a 27-year-old lawyer in 1880 San Francisco, bustles her bustle into the august chambers of Shepherd, Shepherd, McNaughton and Hall, attorneys-at-law, snatching a wealthy young widow, Annjennet Hannaford, as her personal client and forcing the outraged senior partner, Joseph Shepherd, to take her on as a junior associate. Mrs. Hannaford badly needs her help, since her husband, banker Cornelius Hannaford, was fatally stabbed in the genitals, and his widow is receiving subpar advice from Shepherd, et al. Sarah uses the brand-new Married Women's Property Act to get her client access to some badly needed cash while her husband's estate is still in probate. When Mrs. Hannaford and her actor lover, Peter Fowler, are arrested for Hannaford's murder, however, Sarah must brush up on criminal law, since, unlike every male involved, she naturally doesn't believe for a minute that her client is guilty. Instead, she's interested in the fortune Hannaford made together with three other partners double-dealing at the Comstock Lode. When those partners turn up murdered, one by one, in the same gruesome fashion, it begins to look as if Sarah may be right. Lively details of a lively time and place spice up a typically feisty heroine's struggles against sexism. Agent: Jimmy Vines

AN EXCITING, WELL-PLOTED HISTORICAL MURDER MYSTERY!

When I ordered the first book in this historical mystery series, I was pleasantly surprised to find it well-written and inhabited by some interesting and truly wonderful characters. The book is set in 1880 San Francisco, and the author did a great job of adding period details that made me feel like I was actually there. I also loved the way she left clues to the murderer's identity, and still left me surprised when I reached the end of the book. I think Sarah Woolson is a terrific, feisty, determined heroine. Any woman who was brave enough to take on the male legal establishment at that time in California history, deserves a medal! MURDER ON NOB HILL kept me engrossed and turning pages until the very end. I highly recommend this wonderful new mystery series!! I can't wait to read Tallman's latest mystery, SCANDAL ON RINCON HILL!
