Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Fictional author/sleuth Fletcher, in New York City on a book tour, witnesses the apparent murder of an old acquaintance from her hometown of Cabot Cove, ME. Her involvement leads her to corrupt police, drug deals, mistaken identities, and more murders--as well as intense media attention and even a brief stay in a jail cell. Characters are interesting and well developed although the mystery loses its momentum before the end. While a few of Beth Porter's New York accents are overdone, most are believable, and her Maine accents are convincing as she maintains the integrity of the characters through her presentation of their vocal personalities. There's lots of New York atmosphere, too. A light, enjoyable mystery without much depth. Recommended for larger collections.--Melody A. If you like Jessica Fletcher-you'll love this!

For anyone who likes Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher you'll love this! It's a must read for anyone who likes mystery and suspense stories. The rest of the series are equally good!

Not Bad, But Not the TV Show!

Though sometimes thought to be the first book in the Murder, She Wrote Series, this is actually the second book, following Gin and Daggers. Once again, I gave this book three stars but it really only rates about 2 and a half. It's always great to see Jessica Fletcher again, but Donald Bain still hasn't found the right story that fits in with the TV Show. Granted, these are his interpretations based on the show, but as I stated in my Gin and Daggers review, if your going to write a Murder, She Wrote book, it should follow the source. This book also suffers from the fact that the plot feels like the first novel, except that instead of London, we're in NYC. Again, as in his first book, Bain seems to enjoy the city setting and is an adept tour guide. However, I feel this book missed that Christmas in New York feel he may have been going for. I won't go into detail, but the plot is again more of a police procedural. The story hinges on the seamy side of the witness protection program. Though the plot is plausible and the solution makes sense, this really isn't much of a mystery. There's a very small cast of characters, so really what are we detecting? The subject matter is not the light and cozy plot threads that fans of the show enjoy. And there isn't much to detect. No special clues to spot or dialogue clues to ferret out. And most times, it doesn't even feel as if Jessica is detecting anything. Again, she seems to stumble into things and eventually is handed the answer. I like my mysteries to be logical, with fair-play clues to spot and a neat solution. They may not be plausible, but they're fun. Still, this book is one of the better ones in the series. Definately read them in order, as a few details about Gin and Daggers are referenced in this book. All in all, not a bad book, but not great and definately not the Jessica Fletcher story your used to. However, as the series goes on, some of the books eventually hit a better stride.
