    Better, But Not Great!

Donald Bain's third Jessica Fletcher novel, Rum & Razors, finds Jessica on vacation on St. Thomas in the Carribbean. The book, like his 2 previous entries in this series, serves as a delightful travel guide to the area. Mr. Bain knows his locations and details them quite nicely in all of his Murder, She Wrote novels. However, as with the other two novels that I've reviewed, he still doesn't capture the feel of the television show. This book is the best of the first three, if your reading them in order. I've been rating these books with 3 stars, simply because they're written very well, and there's nothing majorly wrong with them. However, as a mystery reader and fan of the show, so far in this series, Mr. Bain hasn't delievered what I enjoy in a mystery novel. This book is better only because as you start to read the book, the plot feels more like an episode of the show. A friend of Jessica's is murder, at a beautiful island resort. There's a wider range of suspects, each with motives and Jessica is very active in the pursuit of the killer. In the previous two books, she seems to stumble more on clues, where as in this book she's actually snooping and hunting them down, that's a major plus. However, the book falls apart in the end. As is the norm with this series, Jessica doesn't use vital clues to solving the mystery, and I'm sorry but I feel that the author doesn't plant enough "fair-play" clues for us to follow along. And, without trying to give away the ending, I'm getting bored with Mr. Bain's consiparcies, government and/or police corruption plots and so on. What happened to the classic cozy that the television series was? A single murderer, or one with a partner, who are brought to justice by some cleverly concealed clues that Jessica, using her powers of observation and deductive reasoning, fingers at the end? Still, an easy, quick read, good escapist fun, but a luke-warm mystery.

I loved this book read it in a flash.

Donald Bain describes the scenery so well, that I felt I was really there. He plays the part of Jessica so well, I could picture Jessica moving and speaking, the way he described. The book got me through a 4-hour flight, and I absolutely could not put it down. The ending was rather outrageous, but a very original and creative one, although. I also thought that the mystery could've used some evidence plots, as Jessica only interrogates, and comes up with stories and rumors. I felt something was missing. Overall, I think this title is quite exceptional, even very entertaining, keeping you wanting more. Recommended.

    EXCELLENT!

This is well above any of the other Jessica Fletchers I have read. In fact, this is my favorite, and I have read several. It is totally enjoyable, a truly 'keep you guessing' murder mystery. The scenes as describing the caribbean are so exact! You won't be disappointed here!

    Easy enjoyable reading

If you like the Caribbean and a good murder mystery this book is for you. Vivid description of places and characters. Creative ending. Tv's Jessica Fletcher has been captured here in the written word.
