Randall Kirbo had disappeared during spring break; as far as the police are concerned, the kid had just decided to take off. His parents don't agree with that theory, and Truman Smith has some questions of his own. Too quickly, Truman Smith realizes that he's in trouble, too. He can't trust his sources, he can't trust his witnesses, and it's becoming clear that he might not be able to trust his friends. That leaves him with his cat, too many theories, and a target painted on his back.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The fifth appearance of Anthony Award- winning Crider's Rockford-like PI, Truman Smith of Galveston, Tex., (following Prairie Chicken Kill) is a thinly plotted tale. Persuaded by his reclusive friend Dino to take on a missing-person case, Tru agrees to look into the disappearance of college student Randall Kirbo, missing since spring break, whose parents are displeased with the official investigation. A look at the police files leads Tru to think the police investigation was perfunctory. Then he finds out that local vice queen, Big Al, owned the party house where the youth was last seen and learns that the body of a dead college girl washed up on a local beach after the same break. Linking the two cases, Tru employs his professional skills of lying and foolhardiness to determine Big Al's involvement in the crimes. When Tru discovers that Dino's daughter was at the same party and then someone subsequently shoots at her, he realizes there's more going on than student partying. Tru and Dino are a pleasantly contrary pair and Galveston Island's an appealing setting, but the mystery here is run-of-the-mill. (Oct.)
VOYA - Jane Van Wiemokly
Crider's Galveston, Texas, detective Truman Smith is an oddly entertaining character. He leaves his home as little as possible, working mostly on cases that can be investigated using his home computer. He has a smart mouth and likes nothing better than to sit around drinking Big Red and reading classic American literature. When old high school friend Dino asks Tru to help find the missing college son of another friend, he reluctantly begins the unwanted task as a favor to Dino. While searching for Randall Kirbo, missing since spring break, Tru connects his disappearance with the death of a college girl and with a rental house owned by a local, female thug called Big Al. Tru exhibits quick wit in getting out of hot situations and intuitive reasoning in solving these multiple crimes. These attributes combine with his smart-aleck attitude and almost comical relationship with Dino (squabbles and all) to hold the reader, even though this fifth Truman Smith mystery offers no suspenseful shockers. Tru impels the reading, not the urge to find out who done it. VOYA Codes: 3Q 2P J S (Readable without serious defects, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).

    more from this reviewer

    A thrilling read

Murder Takes A Break reunites us with the persistent and wry Truman Smith ¿ purveyor of smart comments that threaten his safety, and solver of even the most intricate and emotionally fraught mysteries.

When two local kids on Spring Break have gone missing, Truman is sent to find out what really happened at the Beach House. With his erstwhile sidekick Dino, Tru¿ enters the backstreet world of Galveston, with dealers, dodgy Police, families with plenty to hide and the usual dose of violent abandon. There¿s more than a few awkward moments, and as with the previous story: The Prairie Chicken, what starts as a fairly simple missing persons case rapidly turns into a body-strewn thriller.

Snappy and tense, you do actually wonder whether Truman will survive this mystery ¿ such is the concerted threat he faces ¿ and by the time you get to an explosive climax, you know you¿ve experienced a well-paced and plotted thriller from a writer of quality.

    Texas size mistakes

You made silly mistakes , Texas firearms law, firearms in general and the fact that ems does not apply casts or suture in the field. You need an editor and you need to cut your word count by one third.

I read this book, as well as the rest of the series, and really

I read this book, as well as the rest of the series, and really enjoyed it. I just wish that there were more books in the series. As far as the E.M.S. mistake goes, there might have been a minor one, no book is perfect, and I'm a cop who used to work E.M.S. and no mistakes in the book bothered me. I want to see more Truman Smith. Sounds like one of Mr. Crider's ticked off former publishers just wants to bad mouth him on here without having the guts to leave his name.

    Interesting Read

This book appealed to me because I live on the gulf coast near Galveston. I really enjoyed his references to familiar places in and around both Galveston and Houston. I honestly didn't have the end figured out in this one. Although I would recommend it to others, I can't say it's an outstanding book. I wasn't overly anxious to pick it up each night as with many other books. However, I'm glad I finished it.

    Great Read

While not the most involved murder mystery, the characters were very compelling. I really enjoyed the sense of humor.
