Jo Ravens is thirty-two, divorced, and stuck in a rut. She wants a new career, and she wants to lose the sixty pounds she packed on after her divorce. Overview

Jo Ravens is thirty-two, divorced, and stuck in a rut. She wants a new career, and she wants to lose the sixty pounds she packed on after her divorce. Her knack for finding dead bodies points her in the right direction for a career change, while her sister’s exuberance for weight loss gimmicks enables both of them to try new, creative ways to shed pounds.

When Jo crashes her bike in a construction site, she lands on a naked girl with a knife in her chest. Because Jo was instrumental in solving two previous murders with the help of her sister and their journalist friend, she enlists them once again to help solve the girl’s murder. Things become creepy for Jo when the murdered girl appears in her dreams and offers unusual clues to her death.

Murder Under Construction is a humorous mystery with Jo’s family adding to the antics of the three women. Mama caterwauls, her sister's two children offer sleuthing assistance, and her brother laughs at all of them from the sidelines. Murder Under Construction is light, easy-breezy reading from Maddie Cochere.

I fell in love with this book from the first sentence. "I swear that body was hard as a rock when my butt bounced off it." With an opening line like that, you know you're in for a fun ride. Jo is a thirty-ish woman with an interest in sleuthing. She has no qualms about putting her nose where it might not belong. I loved her self-confidence in her PI skills while at the same time felt her vulnerability as an overweight woman longing to return to the shape she used to be. The other characters in the book are just as colorful. There is mystery, humor, and fun subplots (a sister determined to home school her less-than-enthusiastic kids, a mother with a penchant for potty humor, humorous weight-loss attempts). I have only read one Janet Evanovich novel, but I think Murder Under Construction is in a similar vein to the Plum series, only I enjoyed this book more. The writing is sharp, fast-paced, and breezy. The perfect book for when you want a simple, entertaining escape. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

This books was funny at times, but lacked a lot of character development. I didn't feel I wanted to invest in follow up books.

If you're looking for a fun, light mystery, you'll enjoy this. It's fast and easy to read, and the mystery is intriguing. The characters are fairly shallowly developed but entertaining. The one thing I really didn't like was the main character, Jo Ravens, solves the mystery almost entirely from "clues" she gets from dreams she has. It's too contrived and a cop out for solving the mystery. If the author doesn't resort to this same trick in other books in the series, I might be interested in reading them. JB

I like thrillers but not always want an intense read. This was a great vacation read. I couldn't wait to read each chapter. Very enjoyable and funny as well.

Liked the characters, good plot but too many descriptions of bodily functions.

As others have written there are laughs and it is light reading. What I did not like is the way the author wrote about Joe and her eating habits. Yes, it makes for laughs but if anyone has ever had an eating problem this is exactly how one lives and eats. And that, readers is nothing to laugh about. I found at times Joe can be very irritating. But, the book is free.

Murder under construction is a well crafted book with memorable characters. There is Jo and her sister, both overweight and different than the babe detective. The plot line travels well with the discovery of a girl's body by Jo on a construction site. The plot follows the clues and introduces a 'mama' character, a chain smoking bingo player with salty language. The skills are well within the range of the characters and shows how much one can learn by listening. Also highlighted is small town life where the people know one another . It is a quick read and quite enjoyable from a woman's POV.

Cute mystery that held my interest, I found the main character annoying in that she is self indulgent and self destructive with no end in sight for her to straighten herself out. Not a likeabke character.
