Chapter One

Trailing close behind in the rusted, rattling junk heap of a car, he watched her, plotting, planning ... growing tense and hard and excited.

Between two jobs and school she scattered her routine, but he'd figure it out. Everyone fit a pattern eventually. People were sheep. Predictable. Easily overcome. Especially with his unique brand of tools.

She was the one to blame, the one who'd fucked up all his plans. She was the one directly responsible for ruining his life.

Before she caught on to him, before anyone could stop him, he'd have her. Then he'd have his much-deserved retribution.

She turned into the parking garage at the building where she worked the night shift. Slow and watchful, he drove on past the entrance. And he saw things he hadn't expected. He smiled with the discovery. Another way to twist the knife, to get his revenge.

The little bitch deserved no less for putting her nose where it didn't belong.

With building impatience and anticipation, Quinton Murphy leaned against the cinderblock wall and checked his watch for the tenth time. How pathetic for a grown man to go to such lengths to talk with a woman.

A woman who had refused him-after kissing him senseless.

He didn't leave. He wouldn't leave. Not until she showed up and he had a chance to set things right withher.

Loosening his tie and pulling at the collar of his dress shirt, he cursed the unseasonable warmth of the October night and the stifling stillness of the parking garage. He checked his watch yet again, and then, finally, her yellow Civic pulled through the entrance.

Headlights flashed around the gray, yawning space, now mostly empty except for his Porsche Carrera and the vehicles of the night shift workers. Her brakes sounded a little squeaky, and she parked with a jerk of the gears that shook the aged automobile.

Always in a hurry-that described Ashley Miles. At least from what little he'd seen of her. He had to wonder if she ever relaxed or took a day off to laze around.

As soon as her engine died and her headlights went dark, the driver's door swung open and she stepped out. Quinton soaked in the sight of her, letting his gaze meander along the length of her long legs, her trim midriff, and the understated curves of her small breasts before settling on her face.

Once again, he mulled over her startling effect on him-and wondered at it. At thirty-three he was hardly a monk. He'd had infatuations, relationships of convenience, and once he'd even been in love.

But something about Ashley, some indefinable nuance in her nature got to him in a most unusual way.

Pieces of her were perfect: her dark eyes, her long silky hair, and her mouth ... God, he loved her mouth.

She smiled easily, had a sharp tongue, and said no far too often.

But she kissed with an enthusiasm and hunger that made her impossible to dismiss, almost as if she'd never kissed before and the sensation of it overwhelmed her. He wanted more. He wanted everything. Until he had her, he wouldn't be able to get her out of his thoughts.

Put all together, Ashley made a mostly average appearance. But when she spoke, all that sassy attitude came crashing out, and it made her seem appealing yet unattainable, brash yet vulnerable.

She said things he didn't expect, behaved in ways unfamiliar to him. She smiled, and he wanted to strip her naked.

Her car door slammed hard and she looked around the garage behind her, talking to herself in low mumbled words that reeked of irritation and disgust.

Unaware of his presence, she said, "For God's sake, Ashley, get a pair, why don't ya."

Never taking his gaze off her, Quinton pushed away from the wall. Patience, he told himself. He'd have her, and soon.

"A pair of what, Ashley?"

She screeched. The high-pitched yell of panic bounced around the cavernous garage in deafening force, causing Quinton to wince. "For God's sake, it's me."

Eyes wide, she whipped around, zeroed in on him, and went from startled to furious in a heartbeat. The change was something to see.

And she looked as desirable pissed as she did impatient.

After stomping across the concrete floor, she thrust her chin up close to his face. Since this was the second time he'd startled her in the garage, he felt a little guilty. Holding up his hands in concession, he said, "My apologies."

She didn't soften a bit. "You're making a habit of this, Murphy, and I don't like it."

Quinton gave in to a half smile, gently touched her hair, and lied through his teeth. "Not on purpose. I just finished some late business. Since I knew you were due in soon, I decided to wait to say hi before heading home." The last time he'd seen her, he'd been with a client. A sexy, blond, female client, and though he knew Ashley wouldn't admit it, she'd misinterpreted the situation.

Now he needed to make her understand his interest for her and her alone.

For a single suspended moment she stared at him, mostly at his mouth, her expression soft and giving ... then with a frustrated growl she strode away from him.

Damned contrary woman. She wouldn't make this easy for him. But she did make it interesting.

Quinton propped his hands on his hips and watched her long-legged retreat, undecided on whether or not he should say anything more.

But after only three steps she halted. Her straight, stiffened back still to him, she snapped by way of explanation, "I usually don't scare so easy."

An olive branch? He gladly accepted it. "I gathered as much." He hadn't known Ashley long, but already he accepted that she wasn't a timid woman, definitely not a woman who jumped at shadows. In fact, he'd have described her as ballsy beyond belief. "So what's going on? Why are you so jumpy?"

"It's nothing."

She shut him out and he didn't like it. "Okay." He'd let that pass for now. Harking back to her earlier comment, he asked, "What do you need a pair of?"

Her shoulders relaxed and she turned to flash him a cheeky grin. "Balls."

"Well, good God, I hope not."

She shook her head. "I could use them in the figurative sense."

He chose to see her chattiness as an invitation and fell into step beside her. "Want to tell me why?"

Her shoulders lifted. "I've had the weird feeling that someone's watching me." She glanced up at him. "It's probably you giving me the willies."

"Me?"

She poked him in the chest. "Every time I turn a dark corner, you seem to be there."

Half under his breath, he muttered, "Not exactly the reaction I'd hoped for." The first time he'd met her, she'd been running for the elevator and he was stepping out. She'd ended up in his arms, and from that point on, he'd been a goner.

He stepped ahead of her to open the door to the building.

In her usual long-legged march, Ashley went in past him. He had a feeling she'd keep walking until she left him far behind.

On a sigh, he said, "Ashley, wait."

She paused and one slim brown eyebrow lifted. "For what?"

She looked ... well, adorable. Her disheveled brown hair draped her shoulders, partially concealing the ridiculous long-sleeved T-shirt she wore. Ashley had the oddest fashion sense he'd ever witnessed, but somehow it suited her spirit.

    great read!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I would suggest reading Jude's Law first which helps to set this one up. Ashley's honesty and upfrontness was a real treat...not one of those sappy girls!

    27 Year Old Virgin?

This book was just awful I could barely make myself finsih it. To start with how many 27 year old virgins are there out in the world today? Let alone one who meets and falls in love with a multi millionair who is only too happy to school her love making gag. The sex sceens OMG I was embarrassed who needs to explain how to have sex? Ashley was an annoying touch girlwana be and Murphy please too sappy. As the book went on it just got worse.

Quinton Moore was raised in affluence while Ashley Miles grew up with nothingness. However, the rich CEO breaks all his habits to the point he feels almost like an obsessed stalker just to spend a few minutes with the building¿s cleaning lady mid twenties Ashley Miles who recently kissed him senseless, but rejects his advances since. He wants her even on her terms she feels the attraction from her head to her toes and all points in between, but fears giving up her hard earned independence and life goals. Besides she has no time for a man between two jobs and school especially a hunk who will discard her once his lust is satiated. When someone threatens her life, Quinton demands she move into his home for her protection. She reluctantly agrees, but wonders who will protect her heart from her host. As they fall in love, this adversary expands his attempted assault to include anyone that he observes Ashley seems to befriend his goal to destroy the meddling woman. A secondary character in JUDE¿S LAW, Quinton defies his namesake¿s law with optimism that when it comes to Ashley and him, love makes sure that everything that can go right will go right though it might take all night. Ashley is a delightful protagonist as her hard work to get ahead is inspirational. Their mutual desires makes for a heated romance with a matchmaking thug pushing them together with his obsession to kill her (though the why comes extremely late). Harriet Klausner

    Wasted money

I couldn't finish this mess! Ashley, a 27 yr old virgin, acts and re-acts like a 12 yr old. I literally had to flip through the sex scenes...nothing sexy or realistic about these characters. Wasted money.

    Another winner from Lori Foster!

Just when Ashley Miles has her life in control and headed in the right direction, she meets a man offering her the world all he wants in return is her heart.****** Ashley Miles has been on her own for so long that she doesn¿t know what to make of the attention being paid to her by Quinton Murphy. Ashley is being threatened by a ruthless murderer who is out for revenge. When Quinton discovers this his pursuit of Ashley intensifies and he is more determined than ever to have and protect her. The more Ashley discovers about Quinton, including a secret that he would prefer stay secret, the more difficult it becomes to resist his potent charm.****** Quinton Murphy is rich beyond belief, a very successful businessman, born with the proverbial silver spoon. He could have any woman he wants, any time he wants, and while Ashley isn¿t the most sophisticated woman he has ever known, she¿s the one that he finds adorable, the one he wants, and the one he is determined to have.****** Convincing Ashley that a life with him doesn¿t mean losing the independence that she has worked so hard to attain will take every bit of patience and persistence that Quinton can muster.****** Ashley¿s self-imposed solitude is heart-wrenching and her refusal to lean on anyone will have readers willing Quinton to be the one to reach her heart. Lori Foster once again gives readers a wonderfully romantic story - a touching tale of two people who couldn¿t be more opposite, or more perfect for each other.

    Another Winner by Ms Foster

Ms. Foster has written another winner. This time the story is about to very different people. Quinton was born with every advance when Ashley was born with less than nothing. Ashley is determine to make it on her own without help from anyone. But when Ashley¿s life to in danger Quinton is determine to protect her. Wither or not Ashley wants it. This story has a good balance of romance (the steamy kind) and suspense. This book is visited by characters from Jude¿s Law but is a stand alone read. But Jude¿ Law is another must read. I have never been disappointed in a book with Lori Foster¿s name on it.

    Another sizzling romance!

Ashley and Quinton are both, driven, determined and passionate. Each one of them is used to get their way, always. Ashley`s smart mouth and sexy looks have Quinton tied up in knots! The attraction is there and even though they are both from completely different backgrounds, Quinton is determined to see where their attraction leads. That is why, when Ashley¿s life is in danger Quinton step up to the task of ¿protecting¿ her. She has conflicting emotions about being taken care of. She is an independent working woman, used to do what needs to be done without counting on anyone, the only problem is, she is really enjoying all the caring and pampering. Quinton simply wants her safe. He cant bear the thought of anyone hurting Ashley and with the possessiveness he feels towards her, he is not about to let some threats get in his way. But something neither of them counted in the picture shows unexpectedly, and love have a way of always shining above all else. This is a hot & sexy, fun read, great storyline, and as always Lori¿s trademark of fresh, strong sexy characters shows in this outstanding, amazing romance! I must reaffirm once again, that like with all her books, you will not be disappointed with this one. It can be read as a stand alone, but you can get a better taste of the characters if you read Jude¿s Law first. Besides is another great book you will want to keep!

    Murphy's Law is a keeper

Lori Foster pens another outstanding story of staying true to oneself but also opening up your heart to love. ________________________ Ashley Miles has always had to depend on herself for so long she has never really had someone to lean on for help. There has been one exception her best friend May Price. They have a bond that few people ever experience and Ashley treasures it. Local CEO Quinton Murphy keeps invading her thoughts on a daily basis. Ashley works two jobs and goes to school, she keeps telling herself she has no time for Quinton¿s potent kisses. _________________ Quinton Murphy was attracted to sassy, sexy Ashley from the moment they met. His life, he thought was full between his job and his charity work. Since knowing Ashley he realizes something important is missing. Quinton pulls out all the stops to make Ashley realize she can carve some time out for them in her life. These two head strong and fiercely independent people must learn some give and take along the way. __________ When threats to Ashley¿s life increase, Quinton moves her to his home for protection. Being with each other 24/7 makes them both realize they have found something to treasure. __________ Murphy¿s Law is a romance readers dream book. You have two likable and lovable characters that you want them to succeed in every aspect of their life. Their love scenes are so full of love and desire it makes you sigh. Murphy¿s Law also teaches about family, how important it is and its not necessarily the ones you are related to that make it a family. But it can be those you are the closest to that make up your true family. Lori Foster has written another keeper.

    You ain't seen nothin' yet!

In Jude¿s Law, Lori Foster gave you a tempting peek at Quinton Murphy. And if you¿re anything like me that fleeting glimpse made you want more of the hot, sexy millionaire. I mean, seriously, is there anything hotter than a hunky, tenacious man on a mission? Quinton's newest undertaking: Ashley Miles......................Ashley has absolutely no time in her life for men, but that doesn¿t stop Quinton. In fact, her impeccable work ethic, and self-sufficient attitude only turn Quinton on more. He loves that she¿s determined to make her own way, that she¿s anxious to gain a better life for herself through hard work and long hours, and he adores the fact that he can make her body burn with just a kiss.............Unfortunately, Ashley¿s hectic schedule leaves Quinton scrambling for every small scrap of time that he can get. Luckily for Quinton, he¿s an inventive sort of guy, and soon Ashley finds herself getting in way too deep with the handsome lug. Lust turns to love and Ashley absolutely has no time for love. Pfft, as if! With two jobs and school to boot, she barely has time to sleep and eat. And it doesn¿t help that Quinton turns out to be a genuinely nice guy. Underneath the expensive suits and beyond the muscled physique lay a heart of gold. Oh man, Ashley is such a goner........................However, not everyone is quite so captivated by Ashley Miles. Murphy's Law is a winner!

The moment wealthy businessman Quinton Murphy spies Ashley Miles, he knows he has to have her. In fact, she¿s good enough for him to kiss her right then and there¿and he does--and Quinton wants more. But trying to convince Ashley she needs to make time for him proves to be a hard job for Quinton. Then he realizes someone is apparently following Ashley and that it¿s up to him to protect her. But how can you convince someone they need protection when they won¿t let you get near them?----------------------------------------------------------------- -- Ashley has a spunky spirit and she¿s not afraid to speak her mind and doesn¿t have time for a romance when she¿s working two jobs and going to college. Quinton¿s moves make her reevaluate, but she tells herself there can¿t be anything between them. Besides, she has her best friend May¿s upcoming wedding to Jude Jamison to worry about. Ashley¿s not looking forward to getting dressed up as a bridesmaid when she feels more comfortable in casual clothes. But Quinton¿s kisses are very persuasive and Ashley finds it hard to resist him. Then she learns she may be the target of a crazed man. So, maybe she better take Quinton up on his offer. Lori Foster brings readers the story of Ashley and Quinton, who briefly appeared in JUDE¿S LAW (Feb. 2006). Both Ashley and Quinton are strong-willed people bent on never backing down to others. But when these two clash, it¿s like a fierce storm. Watch out, folks, they¿re in for a tidal wave of love. Ashley is down to earth and intent on lifting herself from the dredges of poverty she grew up in, while Quinton was born to wealth. These two may not seem to have much in common, but the sparks fly every time they meet. Spending time together, Quinton and Ashley teach the other a bit of how ¿the other side¿ lives and learn that maybe they do have something in common¿like falling in love with each other--------------Patti Fischer for Romance Reviews Today

    Steamy Fun Read

Ashley Miles and Quinton Murphy, who are secondary characters in Jude's Law, had a story begging to be told and finally the wait is over..........Ashley attends school and works two jobs to attain her long range plan and has no time for involvements. Quinton is the CEO of a consulting firm, who after literally running into Ashley wants to get to know her better, especially since there was so much heat between them on that first meeting. He cannot believe that she will not make time for him! Mix in a lunatic killer out for revenge, secrets that have yet to come to light and the hot sizzling action between Ashley and Quinton whenever they are around each other and you have a dynamite story. Quinton is a typical alpha male who is strong willed with a need to protect, but is forever tied in knots by Ashley's bluster, honesty, determination and no nonsense ways.......... This story has it all, you will be laughing out loud in places, reaching for ice to put out the fire and your heart will be pounding with the suspense. Lori has crafted a true love story, with lots of sparks and action....where best laid plans have a way of changing. Right from the first page you are drawn into the book and stay involved till the last page, but then that would be......Murphy's Law.........

More than a little romance and some good suspense in this story of the lovely Ashley who is determined to make something of her life on her own and to maintain her hard-earned independence. But come on! Who can resist the glorious Quinton? Not Ashley. Foster has written another good story here.

This one is my favorite !!!

This is without a doubt my favorite book of Ms. Foster !! I feel in love with Quinton Murphy and Ashley Miles during the first kiss in JUDE and I'm been dying for this book every since. Ashley has a smart mouth that will get her in all kinds of trouble, but will have you laughing your head off. Quinton is a 'rich guy' but he is so different that what Ashley that he would be. The particular scene that drove that home to me just really clenched this book to me and you'll love the whole book.

    Don't miss this book!!!

Ashley Miles is a hard-working, goal-oriented woman. She works two jobs and goes to school trying to make a better life for herself. Her busy schedule doesnt give her time for much else, but there is one very determined man who will do any and everything he can to be the extra-curricular activity she makes time for. Quinton Murphy is the kind of man I wouldn't mind spending my spare time with (if he wasnt a fictional character and I wasnt married of course :). He is gorgeous, hard-working and also happens to be a wonderful guy! What more can a girl ask for? Quinton is determined to get to know Ashley. She isn't his usual type, but there's just something about the spunky, unique, workacholic that he can't get enough of. Her brutal honesty and scortching kisses ignite a fire in him that isn't easy for him to ignore. When danger finds its way to Ashley's front door, Quinton vows to keep her safe. Ashley is the perfect blend of independant, yet also knowing when she may need help. The more time they spend together, Quinton begins to realize he wants to be more than just an extra-curricular activity to this very special woman. Ashley was my favorite kind of heroine. She was strong, yet vulnerable. She was sacracstic, honest, and unique. Seeing the milionaire, buisnessman fall for his office cleaning lady gives every woman out there hope that anything can happen. MURPHY'S LAW was a funny, passionate romance. Ashley and Quinton were both a breath of fresh air and were each uniquely special characters. Their story was everything I was hoping for and more.
