Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Joseph R. Dupper, DPM (Illinois Masonic Medical Center)
Description: This text is an overview of musculoskeletal disorders of the lower extremity, with an emphasis on the arthritides. Most of the contributors are podiatrists.
Purpose: The purpose is to compile in a logical manner information from a variety of specialists concerning systemic diseases that manifest themselves in the lower extremity. Although the need for such a book in our profession may be questioned, for the most part the purpose is achieved.
Audience: The targeted audience is practicing podiatrists and others treating the foot and ankle on a daily basis, although students would certainly benefit from the section on basic science. Although I'm certain the authors are credible, many chapters written by podiatrists would hold more credence if written by specialists in that particular field.
Features: The illustrations and photographs included are adequate, but of note are several photos that are either out of focus or do not adequately show the desired pathology. The chapters on basic science and tendon transfers are excellent.
Assessment: This book is an adequate overview of the musculoskeletal disorders of the lower extremity. The title is somewhat misleading, however, in that it mainly deals with the manifestations of systemic disease that the podiatrist may experience in practice. Noticeably absent is any section dealing with trauma, which one would expect judging from the title. Although a good reference book, little about it makes it stand out as a valuable asset to its targeted audience.
