Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Richard Tupler, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This book presents a comprehensive but succinct bulleted outline of all of the essentials of musculoskeletal imaging. It is well organized into sections with over 1,400 clear and relevant images, in an exceptionally user-friendly format. Because it is so compact, clinically oriented, and easy to read, this is an ideal review tool as well as a convenient quick reference for practice.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the basics of imaging of common musculoskeletal disorders for radiology residents and students. It has succeeded in its goal. It presents clear images of common diseases, disorders, and injuries with a comprehensive scope, accompanied by a succinct outline format of key facts focusing on the imaging features and relevant clinical features of each condition. Specifically, the short bulleted text makes for a quick learning and review encounter. It is a worthwhile companion for radiology residents and students, particularly while they are on a musculoskeletal rotation as it will serve to efficiently and effectively reinforce relevant facts related to specific disorders.
Audience: The author targets radiology residents and students in training. The book also serves as a quick reference for non-musculoskeletal radiologists. It is well suited for both of these audiences, particularly for radiology residents early in their training on a musculoskeletal rotation as a quick reference, or for those reviewing for oral boards (as there is likely no topic that one would be presented at boards that is not included here).
Features: The chapters cover all anatomic regions and disease entities. The book is well organized into sections with good quality images that serve to reinforce the key points. In particular, the sections on imaging of orthopedic appliances and prostheses are unusual in a succinct training text, but timely and relevant in their inclusion. The detailed protocols for all the current imaging modalities and, in particular, MRI, make for a truly comprehensive companion. It has particular strength as a quick reference. Additionally, there are appropriate suggested reading references, which are relevant for additional information on a particular subject — this more than makes up for any lack of detail as the suggested references are specifically targeted to the topic under review.
Assessment: Although this is not a substitute for a traditional musculoskeletal imaging residency level text such as the Requisites series, it would be a very good resource for residents to carry with them in their residency training. The book has particular value during the day at the view box, where dedicated reading may not be possible. Here, a quick review of the relevant key facts with appropriate images and directed references may be more efficient and practical. As such, the book fulfills its goal of a companion and is relevant and timely for all levels of training.
