Description: This update of a musculoskeletal imaging book last published in 2006 features almost 400 cases, encompassing all imaging modalities.
Purpose: The purpose is to review variety of musculoskeletal cases, each presented as an unknown, pointing out pertinent clinical information, imaging findings, and relevant differential diagnosis, and concluding with a brief review of pathophysiology.
Audience: The popular Teaching File series is intended for residents, fellows, and practicing radiologists. Musculoskeletal radiologists may find this book useful as a teaching resource, particularly the access to the fully searchable online version. Dr. Chew is a well-known expert in musculoskeletal radiology, and author of many peer-reviewed publications and other books, including Broken Bones: The X-Ray Atlas of Fractures, Chew et al. (Bare Bones Books, 2010) and Skeletal Radiology: The Bare Bones, 3rd edition, Chew (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2010).
Features: Unlike other case review books, this one is organized by anatomic region, covering all categories of musculoskeletal disease: trauma, arthritis, tumor, infection, metabolic, and congenital conditions. The book can be used for an unknown case review, looking up particular entity using the index or searching the online version or reading through cases. While the vast majority of cases have excellent discussions which help narrow the differential diagnosis, a few cases omit important differentiating features (central erosions in erosive OA versus marginal erosions in psoriatic arthritis; edema predominantly in ulnar aspect of the lunate in ulnar impaction syndrome versus diffuse in Kienbock's disease). Some image captions have not been updated; the caption for a wrist ganglion case (page 39) mentions lesion extension into the carpal tunnel (copied from previous edition), while the updated images do not show this.
Assessment: Compared to other musculoskeletal case review books (Musculoskeletal Imaging: Case Review, 2nd edition, Yu (Elsevier, 2008); Teaching Atlas of Musculoskeletal Imaging, Munk and Ryan Thieme, 2008); and Musculoskeletal Imaging: Direct Diagnosis in Radiology, Reiser et al. (Thieme, 2008)), this one has the most cases, is the most current, and features high quality images. Overall, it is a great resource for radiologists in all stages of their careers — radiology residents, fellows, and staff. The 20 percent new cases, the updated, better quality images, and the access to the fully searchable online version are a few of the many reasons to own this new edition.
