LASSIE, GO HOME -- MUSH IS HERE!

Now that Kelly Mangiaro's family has moved out of their apartment into a house, she figures her parents will finally let her get a dog. Instead, her mother gets a job, and Kelly gets a baby-sitter.

Then Kelly comes upon Mush, a mushamute -- a breed not recognized by the Westminster Kennel Club, or by anyone else for that matter, possibly because mushamutes come from the planet Growf-Woof-Woof, in the solar system of Arfturus. Mushamutes can talk, tell time, cook up a storm, and even clean up the kitchen afterwards. Who needs a baby-sitter when there's a mushamute around? Now if only Kelly can persuade her parents to let her keep Mush....

Kelly, who has wanted a pet dog for a long time, runs into a highly-educated, mushamute dog from the planet Growf-Woof-Woof.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-At home during the day with a baby-sitter who reads the newspaper and ignores her except to make frozen chicken meals, young Kelly takes to walking in the woods. One day, she feels something watching her. It looks like a dog but it is actually a highly educated alien. Since her parents are unwilling to let her have a pet, the girl hides Mush from them; when the baby-sitter unexpectedly quits, she uses the opportunity to tell them that it would be cheaper to have a dog than a sitter. Eventually Kelly's parents discover Mush; by then the alien has taught the child to cook a gourmet meal and the deal is clinched. Full- and half-page black-and-white cartoon illustrations accompany the story. The longing for a pet is a familiar theme in children's books and while this one adds a twist, it's still fairly predictable. Nonetheless, this humorous title is likely to appeal to children moving on to chapter books.-Wendy S. Carroll, Grant Elementary School, Ridgefield Park, NJ
