Meet the Author

Scott Jarrett is a musician and producer who has worked with numerous artists, including Willie Nelson, Fiona Flanagan, Mary Klueh, and Keith Jarrett. He has served as music director for many live theatrical productions including the Broadway production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He currently runs Monkey House recording studio in Hudson, Wisconsin. He has released two original albums, Without Rhyme or Reason and The Gift of Thirst. He has taught music theory, composition, production, and/or recording at the Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts in Orlando, The Acting Conservatory in Nashville, and McNally-Smith School of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Holly Day is a music journalist whose articles have appeared in publications all over the world, including Computer Music Journal, ROCKRGRL, Music Alive!, Guitar One, and Mixdown magazines. Her writing has received an Isaac Asimov Award, a National Magazine Award, and two Midwest Writer’s Grants. She is co-author of Music Theory For Dummies (Wiley).

    Work, Not Inspiration

    I do believe Music Composition for Dummies is an inspirational book, but it mostly inspires the hopeful music composer to think about how music compositions are constructed and how that structure can be manipulated to tell new stories in different ways. Scott Jarrett is a gifted song writer and musician. His first album, 1980's "Without Rhyme or Reason," has been cited as an inspiration and innovative record by many. His more recent recordings, "Apercu" (2009) and "The Gift of Thirst" (2005), are wonderful examples of both musicality and lyrical composition. If anyone could write a book about popular composition, Jarrett would be high on the list.

    This Dummies book isn't for real dummies. It assumes you have a musical background and that you are interest in the vocation of songwriting. It also assumes that you are ready and willing to do the work to become a songwriter. From the original concept and style-selection, to refining your work into a professional product, Music Theory for Dummies is a benchmark handbook for anyone hoping to create music and find a market for that product.
