Overview

Much like 1988's Becoming Became, Music finds Dan Balmer making an effort to be commercial and appeal to light jazz radio stations without resorting to outright musical prostitution. Nothing mind-blowing occurs, but the guitarist is likable enough on such soft, easygoing pop-jazz as "The Times We Spend Together," "Prom Night" and "Somebody's Girl." Sometimes, Balmer is much too Metheny-ish for his own good; on "Noah and Tim" and "A Winter Beginning," he sounds like he was going out of his way to emulate the Metheny Group's Letter From Home. Overall, this isn't a bad CD, but as Balmer demonstrated on Don't Forget the Way Home, he's capable of a lot more.
