Music Enriches All: The 21 Years of the Royal Northern College of Musicby Michael Kennedy
Michael Kennedy tells the story of the uneasy birth, vigorous growth and stable maturity of Manchester's internationally known music college. The difficult amalgamation of two proudly independent colleges in 1973 provided contrasting antecedents and complementary values. They combined in the RNCM to yield the high expectations and invariably high standards of a uniquely endowed institution.
The book evokes the generations of gifted students who have achieved international reputations after training at the RNCM. It recalls the opera and concert productions which are the envy of many professional companies. It also traces the various financial crises which threatened but never impaired the College's standards.
The RNCM plays a central role by enhancing the resources of a rich musical environment. Manchester's musical culture, and more widely the musical culture of Britain, owes and incalculable debt to the institution, its students and outstanding facilities.
