Music for Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain

All Music Guide - James Manheim
To listen to the 1970s recordings of David Munrow and his Early Music Consort of London is to realize how pivotal they were in transforming Renaissance music from an academic specialty into a living performance tradition. The performances are based on thorough academic research, but they are varied, vital, and enthusiastic, meant for concert audiences rather than academic meetings. This single disc offers excerpts from two Munrow recordings of the era: Music from the Court of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain and the two-LP Instruments of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, which originally accompanied Munrow's book of the same title. The album's packaging is not quite as ...

The album's packaging is not quite as clear as one might wish in communicating the fact that these are excerpts, and Testament has also made available the complete Music from the Court of Ferdinand and Isabella on another version of the release, minus the instrument tracks and confusingly given the same catalog number. Still, it's worth snagging this version if you run across it: the little pieces Munrow chose to present cornetts, cornamuses, racketts, and so forth are delightful, and the Instruments of the Middle Ages and Renaissance may never be reissued in its entirety. In any event, it's a sign of health that the field of authentic-performance recordings now has its authentic reissuable classics, and here's hoping that Testament succeeds with this release and follows it up with many more. The remastering of the original Abbey Road studios sound is clean and unobtrusive.
