Music for Little People: 15th Anniversary Collection

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Moira McCormick
Headquartered in the redwood forests of northern California, the intrepid independent label Music For Little People has been releasing quality multicultural albums for children for a decade and a half -- many of them performed by adult music celebrities. This 15-track compilation one for each year MFLP's been in business is a satisfyingly varied array of kids' tunes originating from all points of the globe. The big names are here, many of them particularly known to the National Public Radio crowd: a cappella gospel-and-more group Sweet Honey in the Rock check in with the onomatopoeic "Little Red Caboose," Maria Muldaur and Fred Oebber skip through "On the Sunny Side ...

AUDIO CD Fair 081227979720 Ex-library item with stickers and stampings. The disc has been resurfaced and looks excellent. This has not been tested, but we expect that it should ... work fine. We've tested many others that worked fine. Case and artwork are expected to have usage wear. Large crack across back of case. Read more Show Less

The big names are here, many of them particularly known to the National Public Radio crowd: a cappella gospel-and-more group Sweet Honey in the Rock check in with the onomatopoeic "Little Red Caboose," Maria Muldaur and Fred Oebber skip through "On the Sunny Side of the Street," John McCutcheon turns in a cheery "Skip To My Lou." The rock-world maverick Michelle Shocked offers a bluesy "Flying Lesson," regal Mexican-American act Los Lobos does a raucously fun "Woolly Bully," Louisiana treasure Buckwheat Zydeco struts through Mardi Gras standard "Iko Iko," and acclaimed South African vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo presents a beautifully layered "Mbube The Lion Sleeps Tonight." There are oldies by the original artists Bill Haley & The Comets' "Rock Around the Clock", country offerings Faith Hill's "Before You Grow", and children singing the Beatles "Yellow Submarine," from MFLP album ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. There's more -- venerable a cappella group the Persuasions performs an utterly beguiling "Nursery Rhyme Medley," Andrew Gold and Linda Ronstadt camp their way through "The Monster Mash," and sublime contemporary bluesman Taj Mahal teams with choir leader Linda Tillery for the rhythmic "Shake A Tail Feather." This collection is an eye-opening sampler of the wide variety of music that comes under the heading of "children's," and a first-rate tribute to the label that puts it all together.
All Music Guide - Denise Sullivan
Premiere children's music label Music for Little People has compiled a 15 song best-of in honor of their 15 years as a label. This isn't your parent's version of children's music: Buckwheat Zydeco tackles "Iko Iko," Michelle Shocked contributes the fanciful "Flying Lesson," and Los Lobos' version of the Farfisa work-out "Wooly Bully" from their award-winning Papa's Dream all fit into the Little People regime where kids music equals education and entertainment. Even the original rock & roll counting song, "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley & the Comets, fits into the eclectic mix. Clearly this is "children's" music that parents will not only tolerate but might even leave spinning once the kids have left the room.
