Music for Paradise: The Best of Hildegard von Bingen

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Manheim
This fine single-disc collection of music by German abbess Hildegarde of Bingen is not at all what is promised by the rather dubious graphics. The potential buyer may wonder what the phrase best-of might mean with regard to Hildegarde, who did not have specific "hits" in the modern sense. Even more noteworthy is the absence of any performer's name in the graphics. Apparently the compilers thought the name Sequentia would be unfamiliar to the target market, but this Swiss-German group was largely responsible for popularizing Hildegarde's music in the 1980s and 1990s, and you could hardly do better for a sampler.
That's what you get here. The recordings are drawn from Sequentia's six albums of Hildegarde's music; the original sources are not indicated, but a large group seems to come from Symphoniae/Spiritual Songs (1983). The group cultivated a stark, dramatic sound that brought out the soaring, mystical lines of many of Hildegarde's chants, accompanying them lightly with one or more medieval fiddles and a small organ at times. The effect is suitably haunting. You will, of course, get more detail if you seek out Sequentia's original albums, but the collection hints at those riches: though most of the music is sung by a group of women's voices (led by the late Barbara Thornton), there is also a track, "O beata infantia" (track 8), sung by men, which, as the notes discuss, is suitable, for Hildegarde was quite famous among her male contemporaries. The early CD-era sound isn't always quite what it could be, but the notes give you a good idea of the different kinds of chants Hildegarde composed, and in general this release can be recommended for those wishing to get a taste of Hildegarde's music.
