Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-- In this excellent history of an often neglected topic, Currie reports on all aspects of the music of this era, from that used to rally troops on the front lines to that which the folks at home were playing and singing. The role of music in battle is extensively discussed. Also included are interesting biographies of some of the more renowned composers, such as Julia Ward Howe and Patrick Gilmore. The one flaw in the book is its illustrations. The photographs reproduced from other published sources are grainy and often indistinct. Much better are the reproductions of the sheet music, which include both music and lyrics so that modern musicians can play along. A well-written and well-researched book for music and history buffs. --Elizabeth M. Reardon, McCallie School, Chattanooga, TN
