School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-Oliver McKinley has a musical family: his dad plays the saxophone, his mom plays piano, Uncle Oscar plays drums, and Aunt Lucille sings. When the adults get together for jam sessions in the basement, Oliver and his two cousins enjoy the hot and cool jazz and sometimes make instruments of their own. Oliver begins to take saxophone lessons, but when the family decides to enter an international music competition in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the boy is told that he is not accomplished enough to participate. His disappointment turns to joy once he receives outside lessons, practices earnestly, and is able to step in and help the family win first prize. This heartwarming story, filled with bold full-color artwork, is complemented with a spoken-word audio tape that includes the musical sounds of the story.Barbara Osborne Williams, Queens Public Library, Jamaica, NY
