Overview

From Grammy-winning musical icon and legendary bassist Victor L. Wooten comes The Music Lesson, the story of a struggling young musician who wanted music to be his life, and who wanted his life to be great. Then, from nowhere it seemed, a teacher arrived. Part musical genius, part philosopher, part eccentric wise man, the teacher would guide the young musician on a spiritual journey, and teach him that the gifts we get from music mirror those from life, and every movement, phrase, and chord has its own meaning...All you have to do is find the song inside.

Listen to "The Lesson" from Victor Wooten's, Palmystery, here.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Grammy Award-winning bassist/composer Wooten (www.victorwooten.com), perhaps best known for his work with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, shares an allegorical tale of his discovery of the power of music. Narrated by the author, the book centers on the first-person protagonist's series of humbling encounters with a mysterious teacher and spiritual adviser named Michael. Perhaps inspired by the similarly semiautobiographical, mystical tales of Carlos Castaneda, Wooten offers a lesson in personal growth with music as the central metaphor. The primary advantage of the audiobook to the printed edition is the inclusion of original music composed by Wooten, which functions as a backdrop to the spoken text. Recommended for Wooten's fans and those liking jazz and jam bands as well as for listeners interested in metaphysics and spiritual discovery.—Christopher Rager, Pasadena, CA

    Very inspiring

I great read and inspiring for other musicians. It takes on the spiritual side of music either through real experiences or fiction type characters that help add color and joy to the reading. I will pass this on to my kids in hopes that it impacts their musical lives.

Invaluable...this book will change the way you think about music forever.

Absolutely invaluable to anyone who is or wants to be a musician. Granted the writing is a little larger than normal and the writing simplistic at times, but that doesn't take it down any. I would like to ask Victor Wooten how much he exagurated in the book, but whether or not he did, the points made about connections between life, love, music, inspiration, spirituality, motivation, improvisation, thought and knowledge are VERY well made. If you are a musician this book is very relate-able, and you will probably change the way you practice and play forever. It's not just about music, it's about life and how the different aspects of music and life are really the same thing. He shows that things like rhythm, notes, and tone are all things that we experience and improvise with everyday, whether or not we are musicians.

Music Theory for those who dont like Music theory

Awesome book for all musicians, not just bass player's. Teaches the theory that theory books do not teach. Inspirational and motivating. No wonder Victor Wooten is so phenominal on bass. He has the teachings of a musical maniac who teaches music in ways no one knows, but now have the chance to learn. Play an instrument? Read this book even if you are trained in theory or not. It will teach you what you don't know. Cause you know nothing yet
