Overview

For 34 years, Music Reference and Research Materials has been the standard guide to source literature in music. Thoroughly revised and updated by new author Ida Reed, the Fifth Edition retains the scope and authority of the original but also includes many important organizational and content changes that address modern research needs. The thoroughly revised and expanded index, constructed by Linda Blotner, includes over 10,000 entries. Containing critically annotated listings of 3,500 key sources, 1,500 completely new to the volume, the Fifth Edition is organized into chapters by category of source: Dictionaries and Encyclopedias Histories and Chronologies Sources of Systematic and Historical Musicology Bibliographies of Music, Music Literature, and Music Business Reference Works on Individual Composers and Their Music Catalogs of Libraries and Musical Instrument Collections Discographies Yearbooks Directories Electronic Information Resources. I have no doubt the book will continue to enjoy broad appeal in music libraries and in college courses on music bibliography and research. Richard Green, Associate Dean, School of Music, Northwestern University I m impressed by the inclusion of so many new entries. I m also surprised at the number of older titles that have been included for the first time. Ned Quist, Head Librarian, Arthur Friedheim Library, Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University This fifth edition text is a great improvement over previous editions. The subdivisions are clearer, the assignment of items to the subdivisions is more consistent, the citations uniformly are accurate. David Hunter, Music Librarian, University of Texas at Austin
