Music @ Work

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Steve Ciabattoni
Ontario, Canada's the Tragically Hip might not be genre busters or envelope pushers, but for more than a dozen years, this tight-playing five-piece have offered up some of the most dynamic, poetic rock above or below the border. The group's eighth studio album, MUSIC @ WORK leads with a thundering title track -- the kind of guitar-fueled tune that makes you want to hit the open road and not look back. While the anthemic rockers on MUSIC @ WORK make it great driving music, it's also the kind of album that offers solace on even your worst day. There's cold comfort in between the spaces of Gord Downie's quavering voice; like Michael Stipe or even Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett, Downie can hold a listener rapt with a voice that cries out somewhere between desperation and hope. It's rare to find a rhyme in Downie's lyrics, but that doesn't keep you from remembering his striking if obtuse prose, evident in such lines as "Want to be your wheezing screen door/Want to be your stars Algonquin" from "Lake Fever." Some songs don't quite fire on all cylinders, but the Hip have definitely found the right sonic match with producer Steve Berlin Los Lobos, who encourages a raw yet full sound that speaks to the band's tender roar.
All Music Guide - MacKenzie Wilson
Picking up where 1998's Phantom Power release left off, charming Canadian fivesome the Tragically Hip continue with their signature infectious tunes on their eighth studio album Music @ Work. Sensible songsmith and frontman Gordon Downie is classic in hitting upon notable issues and figures, and cites verses from John Cage on the temperamental track "Tiger the Lion." "The Bastard" and "Freak Turbulence" are both intimidating in the fact that the band does not let go emotionally or physically when churning out smashing percussion drives and swirling guitar riffs. "Toronto #4" is a little wispy. Perhaps that's why the Tragically Hip can make it playing arenas. Only attitude can get you that far. Look at U2 and R.E.M.

Tragically Hip continue to get better with ''Music@Work''

The Tragically Hip are the biggest band up in Canada. They have yet to catch on here in the states which I find unbelieveable. Clearly they are miles beyond most bands originating from the states. With ''Music@Work'' they continue their guitar rock ways and catchy, creative lyrics which usually can be interpreted a couple of different ways. Gordon Downie is the best front man I have seen in some time which much of the songs stemming from his inexhaustible supply of lyrics. As great as each album is, it is imperative for one to see them live as these songs just speak to you. It's also a good idea to see them when they come around now since they are playing clubs in the states for an intimate setting may not always be available for these future rock legends. There really is no weak point to ''Music@Work'' with each song taking on it's own identity. So take a chance on something new, I guarantee you will be looking to see when they are coming around.
