Excerpt from Musical Acoustics: Or the Phenomena of Sound, as Connected With Music

This work is intended partly, but not entirely, for the use of students preparing for musical examinations. The Universities of Cambridge and London set papers in Acoustics at their examinations for musical degrees, and a paper in Acoustics also forms part of the Cambridge Middle Class Examinations. There is, it is Relieved, little doubt that the other Universities will in due course follow the example set by Cambridge and London, by adding Acoustics to their curriculum for musical degrees. Unless the demands of the other Universities should hereafter be very much more severe than those of Cambridge and London, the Student may, after he has conscientiously worked out the questions and problems at the end of the book, confidently sit down to work any paper likely to be set in Acoustics.

There is, moreover, in addition to students preparing for examination, a large and increasing public which takes a deep interest in the natural basis of music.
