Children's Literature - Leah Hanson
Hear the beat of a djembe drum from West Africa or dance to the jingle of a Ghanian sistrum. Musical Instruments takes young readers on a whirlwind journey around the world to examine traditional musical instruments from many cultures. Organized by types of sound, this book groups together instruments that are played in similar ways. Chapter titles are clever and descriptive—from "Jingle and tinkle" to "Blow away." Whether by blowing into a hollow tube, or shaking bean-filled gourds, people of many cultures have found ways to use the things around them to make music. Each two-page spread offers up beautifully photographed instruments, fun facts, and a "Look closer" section that shows children how the shape of the instrument creates the desired sound. The mix of music and science is effortless and will satisfy that child who always wants to know "why." Instructions for making a guiro, maracas, a sistrum, monkey drum, ocarina, and one-string violin are included. However, these projects are not for the faint of heart. Each involves papier-mache, clay, or sanding wood, a lot of paint, and the patience to wait a day or two between steps. Overall, Musical Instruments will add just the right note to the elementary music classroom. Reviewer: Leah Hanson
