The goal of Musics of Multicultural America is to introduce students to twelve of the discrete music cultures that constitute America's musical landscape, drawing on ethnomusicology, music and cultural history, and anthropology in an interdisciplinary approach. Employing the format of Schirmer Books's popular "Worlds of Music", the text collects articles on different regional and subcultural musics found in America. The work opens with a brief introductory section to familiarize students with some of the concepts and terminology they will encounter in the book. The body of the book comprises contributed essays on twelve musical traditions, including African-American sacred vocal music, the music of Mexican and Pueblo matachines, Mexican-American mariachi music, klezmer music, and Japanese-American music. The audio CD features selections highlighting the music cultures described in the text, from midwestern polka to New York riot grrrl rock. Kip Lornell is the author of the textbook Introducing American Folk Music. He is a research fellow in American music at the Smithsonian Institution. Anne K. Rasmussen teaches multicultural music at the College of William and Mary.
