Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Muslims in America is a compilation of essays and chapters from other books on the history of Islam and Muslims in America, Muslim American women, American Muslims after the September 11 attacks, and personal accounts of being Muslim in America. There is a discussion of American women who have converted to Islam and a good picture of the great diversity among Muslims, including women who dress more conservatively, as well as men and women who consider themselves Muslim but adopt American social customs like drinking and dating. There is a significant bibliography and a good index. The major problem with the book is its presentation. The margins are very narrow and there are no illustrations, text boxes, or white space to break up the very small text. Students are not likely to pick up this book independently, although teachers might be able to use individual chapters effectively in social studies or advanced placement classes. 2005, Thomson Gale, Ages 15 up.

Gr 9 Up-This balanced compilation of essays begins with a short chapter about the history of Islam in America and includes an article on the Nation of Islam. The pieces that follow discuss bias, issues facing women, and challenges American Muslims faced after the September 11th attacks, along with personal accounts of Muslim immigrants and converts to Islam. The selections present a good variety of viewpoints, some of which (on Islam and feminism, for example) may surprise students who do not know much about the religion. A very good annotated list of organizations to contact is included. This is a solid selection for reports as well as for students with a special interest in the subject.-Kathleen E.
