Overview

Until mid-1944, the Luftwaffe inflicted a huge toll on Allied B-17 bomber squadrons flying missions into the heartland of the Third Reich. The introduction of the P-51 Mustang as an Allied escort fighter changed everything. The P-51 took to the skies in October 1940, and although underpowered by its Allison power plant, it showed great promise, especially in its laminar flow wing with minimal drag at high speeds. The design was revolutionized by a British engine, the Rolls Royce Merlin (this book sheds new light on the Mustang's development in partnership with the RAF), and it could not be matched when diving from high altitude. It was economical to produce (over 15,000 were built), durable, and had an excellent range. The P-51D, the definitive Mustang, with its American built Merlin engine, teardrop canopy, K-14 gun sight and six .50 Browning machine guns, quickly became an icon of aerial warfare, the perfect long-range fighter. It took the fight to Hitler and won. Mustang: Thoroughbred Stallion of the Air covers in unique detail the P/F-51 Mustang and each of its many variants - the A-36A, the F-6 Photo Mustang and the F-82 Twin Mustang, among others - and their use in numerous foreign air forces. With over 250 extraordinary illustrations (sixty-four color), many previously unpublished, and numerous firsthand accounts of battles in the Second World War, Korean War and other conflicts, Mustang: Thoroughbred Stallion of the Air is a comprehensive and compelling book.
