Overview

The world–champion freestyle skateboarder and the man who brought the ollie – the trick that revolutionised the sport by taking it from the ground to the air – to street skating shares the history of skateboarding, as he tells the dramatic story of his life.

At the age of 13, Rodney took the freestyle skating world by storm. He won 35 world titles in less than five years. But through it all, his father looked down on his son's love for skating and pressured him to walk away from the sport and leave behind his fans and status as the most famous skateboarder of his era. After years of stress and conflict, Rodney gave in and promised his father he'd quit for good. But by the time he finally broke free from his suffocating and abusive home life, the popularity of freestyle had waned and given way to vert and street styles. So Rodney picked up his board and started from scratch. With the help of mentor Mike Ternansky, Rodney used his freestyle background to usher in a whole new era of street skating.

Today Rodney is more popular than ever. The videos in his series Rodney Versus Daewon are among the most popular skateboard videos ever produced. He won the 2002 Transworld Skateboarding readers' choice award for favourite street skater and is the most popular character on the top–selling Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video games.

    Book review: The Mutt

Growing up, Rodney Mullen¿s father had always told him that skateboarding would ruin his life. Instead it has given him freedom. Despite holding the best record in consecutive contest wins, his father had told him to stop mocking his 4.0 GPA and stop skateboarding. Rodney would turn his father¿s negative words into fuel that drove him to become the best, winning a decade straight of skateboard contests. The Mutt, written by Rodney Mullen, is a biography of himself. Starting from 1966, it tells of how he was the family misfit, a scrawny, pigeon toed boy who had to wear ¿torture boots¿ to straighten out his feet. Rodney tells how he dealt with drugs, anorexia, isolation, suicide, and a military-disciplined father who almost made Rodney stop skating for good. He tells how he has gone from being the family misfit who was branded a bum and a nerd to creating almost every trick in the sport of skateboarding and creating some of the most successful skating brands in the world. With amazing detail and imagery, The Mutt is a fantastic book that has excitement and wonder. Once you start reading, you get sucked in and can¿t put it down. The book is very easy to relate to and is a fast read. The length of the book is only 273 pages long so it goes by fast. Anyone who enjoys biographies and a good book about how a champion makes it any sport will enjoy this book. I would definitely give this book a 10 out of 10 and it is in my opinion, the best book I have ever read. It is defiantly my favorite book. -Richard

This book is a great read for anyone interested in knowning the history of skateboarding. It shows rodney grow up and incounter and meet alot of people who are today professional skateboarders. This book goes from him being a little boy to being at the top of all skateboarders. This book ties in with Tony hawks autobiography quite a bit. there are many instances in each book that are the same, but look at different through the person. I highly recomend this book to anyone that wants to educate themselfs and enjoy a good book.

    Rodney mullen bio

Rodney Mullen was a young boy who lived in northern California. From the day Rodney was born he lived in a very hard working and wealthy family. Rodney¿s father always believed that if his children had good grades in school that he would give them what they wanted . Since the day Rodney Mullen had started school, his parents had always pushed him hard to get good grades. Although Rodney had it all a good family, strait A¿s he felt as if part of his life has been missing. Soon this was all about to change. On a Monday afternoon Rodney was walking home from school and something caught his eye, something that was soon to change his life. It was his next door neighbor riding his skateboard outside his yard. At that exact moment he felt what was missing had just met his eye. The next day Rodney had built up the courage to confront his neighbor and asked him to try his skateboard out. As Rodney stepped on his neighbors skateboard he felt a feeling of relaxness and joy, it was a feeling of weightlessness, Rodney had never felt this way not even when he was in his room practicing his mathematical equations. At the dinner table Rodney had asked his father if he could buy him a skateboard. Rodney¿s father didn¿t think twice about answering NO! The reason for this was, as a dentist he had too many kids coming into his office with chipped teeth and/or broken teeth. Suddenly at that moment Rodney felt a cold shiver run down his spine. Rodney responded with a ¿yes sir¿ and continued eating. Rodney made it his duty to study this, not sport, but a lifestyle called skateboarding. On the year of 1977 Rodney¿s mother convinced Mr. Mullen to let him skateboard because skating would bring up character and keep Rodney out of trouble. Mr. Mullen agreed to let Rodney skate, but Rodney had to were all pads and the moment Rodney got hurt he was to quit. That night Rodney sat up stair looking out side saying to him self im going to be a skateboarder. Rodney did not know why skateboarding was so important to him he also did not know that in ten years skateboarding was going to save him from depression, eating disorders, paranoia, and suicidal urges. Nine month after continuing skating Rodney became sponsored by a local skateshop. A few years later Rodney started entering contests and winning eachone. Rodney then turned a professional skater by fourteen. By this time Rodney was no doubt the best street/freestyle skateboarder in the world. Rodney invented many tricks such as the kickflip, heelflip, ollie impossible, Casper flip, double heelflip . . . ect. Over the years Rodney has set the standards for himself and for others. Rodney being the first to invent tricks and win 30 professional skateboarding titles. Without him and his love for his nerdy skating, skateboarding as we know it might not exist to this day. It did not come easy practicing two hours a day and six hours on the weekends. To this there is no doubt the RODNEY MULLEN is the best professional skateboarder in the world.

This book is a great read it is, in my openion, really funny, but its not ment to but at a few parts I caught myself laughing out loud. The book shows Rodney Mullens Rise to the top, as he grows in buisness, and in life lessons. One of the best books i have read this year.(I read a lot)

Mutt: How to Skateboard and not Kill Yourself

There is really something wrong with you if you do not like this book. Even if you don't skateboard, this book still helps you with life events. Also, if you read this book, you actually discover how really good Rodney Mullen is. This also makes you look at skaters in a all new way.

    Powerful and inspirational!

For nearly two decades, Rodney's skating has helped me grow as a skateboarder. Now, the words in his book has helped me grow as a person. It was so powerful that I had to finish the book the same day it arrived. All other priorities were set aside. Rodney, thank you.
