Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Flamethrowers, kettledrums, and random acts of psychic violence -- these are a few of Rammstein's favorite things. Bred in the rubble of preunification East Germany, the quartet has a natural predilection for the dark spaces where ugliness and beauty meet and mate -- you know, like Wagner outfitted with all manner of electric noisemakers. Mutter, the band's third full-length, maintains the high-decibel angst, as evidenced by the grinding, gut-pummeling "Links 2,3,4," but daubs some less monochromatic colors here and there on the landscape. The prog-styled string section that blankets "Mein Herz Brennt, Mutter" is at once soothing and creepy, like the incidental music ...

The prog-styled string section that blankets "Mein Herz Brennt, Mutter" is at once soothing and creepy, like the incidental music of some long-forgotten horror flick, while a preschool chorus adds a certain degree of black humor to "Spieluhr." Guitarist Richard Kruspe does a mighty fine impression of just about every item you might spy in your friendly neighborhood foundry, only rarely deigning to turn loose some standard rock progressions. That contributes greatly to Rammstein's oddball appeal, as does the immovable-force presence of singer Till Lindemann, whose guttural wails make it easy to divine the angst of his lyrics, even without a German-English dictionary.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
With the first Rammstein album you hear, it's hard not to be slightly amazed by the sheer chutzpah of it all. The German lyrics, the prog rock tendencies, the classic metal guitars, and the ridiculous basso profundo vocals -- you either fall for it, spurn it, or are utterly bemused by the extremeness of it all. Unless you're a fanatic, it wears a little thin the second time around. And for most listeners, Mutter, the group's third album and sequel to their inexplicable commercial breakthrough Sehnsucht, will be the second time around since it's their first release since becoming a high profile act. Thing is, if you've heard that record, you've pretty much heard Mutter, since all the trademarks are in place, without much noticeable variation. Yes, there are slight differences, chief of which is the cleaner production, which streamlines everything so the guitars don't seem as heavy, the songs not as epic, and the whole enterprise not as ridiculous. That's not the same thing as stripping the group to the basics, however; it's more like wrapping up the music in nice, shiny paper and putting a ribbon on it. That's not really good for a group like Rammstein, but it doesn't dilute their impact, either, because they are what they are and no amount of polish will make them mainstream (nor will it make it possible to take them seriously). So, that does mean that Mutter isn't as good as Sehnsucht, but it isn't a stumble either -- and if you liked the first, you'll like this (not the same thing as being amused by the first -- in that case, this will try your patience). That still doesn't answer the question whether anybody outside of diehards needs more than one Rammstein album, but that's just a question of personal taste.
Rolling Stone - Pat Blashill
1/2 Rammstein evoke a self-loathing and wretchedness that Fred Durst only mimes.
Blender - Jason Bracelin
Mutter is the best thing the Germans have done for the erection since Heidi Klum.

1/2 Rammstein evoke a self-loathing and wretchedness that Fred Durst only mimes.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Industrial Rock/Metal Album!

For quite some time, I was only the most acquainted with Rammstein's Sehn Sucht album, and only various other songs. However, I finally thought about it and started listening to more of their music, and now I wish that I had bought more of their albums a long time ago. Though I think that Sehn Sucht is still my favorite so far, this is still a great album! I listened all the way through it right away after I got it, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I recommend the deluxe edition with the bonus live songs at the end...which is the version I downloaded. I have also heard about half of Reise Reise, which seems to be a great one as well. I am going to probably buy that one next, and I am interested to see how their new album turns out too. I must say...I am now totally hooked on Rammstein! If you like heavy rock or metal, definitely check these guys out if you have never heard of them or heard anything by them. They are a great listen!

    Ramms+ein's masterwork

Be warned, this is HEAVY music, and it's probably not for fans of Jazz or Coldplay. Many people are turned off by how Naziish they sound, but if you can get past the german-ness, you'll see that Ramms+ein creates beautiful (If sometimes very silly) music.

Wow, talk about getting better with time!

Don't let the violins or the two "softer" songs throw you! This album is full of surprises, but it's still Rammstein in all their glory! Listening to this, their third album, you can just hear how far they've come musically. The vocals aren't limited to the big, bad, "basso profundo", there are some parts sung with a softer voice and it's really quite a nice change. I have to say this, "Sonne" is just awesome and "Ich Will" is rockin'! I can't wait for their next album to come out, these guys can only get better! Love them or loath them, you'll never forget Rammstein! (Who out there also agrees?)

    Mutter is AWESOME!!!

This CD, Mutter, is completely awesome! I only have 2 of Rammstein's CDs (this and Sehnsucht) I think this one's better, even if Sehnsucht is absolutely cool!!! In my opinion, all the songs on this rock! Something you should surely have!!!

only 2 groups could top this: Linkin Park, and Rammstein themselves

A great album for anyone. if you speak german, the lyrics will tell you the story. if you don't, the sound and style will captivate you.

    Good, but not great

I think this is Rammstein's weakest album. It lacks the rawness and simplicity of Herzeleid, and the lyrics are not up to par with Sehnsucht (with a few exceptions such as Mutter and Zwitter). Mutter is a fine addition if you have the previous two albums, but if you are new to Rammstein go with Herzeleid and Sehnsucht first.

    Quite possibly Rammstein's best.

After the immensse sucess of Sehnsucht, I expected Rammstein to come back with an album that couldn't match the greatness of their last one. I was very wrong. On this cd, we hear great instrumentals, esspecially in the into and closing songs. Flake Lorenz's keyboard adds a unique sound to this CD, and the child's voice give it the beautiful and creepy sound we expect out of Rammstein. The best songs are "Links 234", "Sonne", "Feuer Frei!" and "Mutter". And if you can speak German, you will find "Zwitter" hilarious!

Need a blockage clearing? Put THIS on

Quite simply goes into industrial darkness like no other records by contemporary artists. The fuzz and crackle and spit of Spieluhr, Links 234, Feuer Frei and the sheer evil of Rein Raus and Ich Will simply took my breath away. The next single is 'Mutter' everyone...!!!! A monumental feast of stommpings!! Can't wait to see them now (Manchester, 17th May). Look out for videos too everyone! QUALITY

Rammstein Once again blew American Metal away!!

I can't believe this Cd. I listened to it and it blew me away. Trash your old Korn, Limp Bizkit and Kid rock Cd's because this is true rock and none of that poser rap rock. Links 2 3 4's teutonic, mind battering guitars are by far the best! Mutter is one of the heaviest Cd's I've heard by any band with out the screaming and mumbling and annoying guitars. 'Ich Will'(I want) is a perfect song for a true metal fan. It has eerie sounds and crouds chanting in the background that beats Kitties music anyday. If you want something a little calmer listen to 'Nebel' because it's a soft calm song and Till really hits the notes with some help from BoBo in the background. I urge any Rammstein fans to buy Mutter!!!!!!!
