Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Mutts is an early reader about mixed breed dogs and general dog care. Since mutts are mixtures of various breeds of dogs, the photographs show a variety of different-looking dogs and puppies. Young readers may be confused by the inclusion of “designer dog” names such as “puggle” for a pug and beagle mix. The large type, short sentences, and crisp photographs help even below-level readers breeze through various chapters including “Marvelous Mix,” “From Puppy to Adult,” and “Taking Care of Mutts.” Since mutts have no distinguishing features or care requirements in common, this book provides general dog care tips and information about animal shelters. The photograph of a large black dog (page 14) to illustrate mutts’ need for exercise is a bit frightening. The “Read More” and “Internet Sites” sections offer opportunities for further study and research about dogs, in general and first dogs in particular. These may require assistance. The book invites readers to use a special code and visit www.facthound.com for age-appropriate sites related to this particular topic. Parents, librarians and teachers will want to collect all of the books in this series, since each is well-written, engaging and captures the essence of its particular breed while supporting national science standards related to life science.
