MUY DIVERTIDO, Ribot's second album, hones an outsider's take on Cuban roots music to an irresistibly ironic point, backed up by muscular playing and hipster production worthy of beer commercials and movie soundtracks. Occasional sideman to Elvis Costello and Tom Waits, improv wiz Ribot has lately devoted himself to the genius of blind tresero Arsenio Rodriguez -- simply the baddest guitarist Latin music has produced, ever. Instead of trying to measure up to the master, Ribot plays fast and loose with a couple of Rodriguez's classic compositions, firing off surf-guitar leads and laconic, badly accented Spanish, and nestles them alongside some Postizos originals. The freewheeling results re-imagine a kind of Cuban-style garage rock, complete with stinging blues asides and organ swells thanks to new Postizo Anthony Coleman. But the rhythms, by percussionists A. J. and Robert J. Rodriguez no relation are the real deal. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but Ribot's whip-smart innovation is what really does the old "Ciego Maravilloso" the Blind Miracle, as Rodriguez was known something proud.

Regrouping his Latin backing band Los Cubanos Postizos, Marc Ribot offers a sequel to his 1998 Arsenio Rodriguez tribute The Prosthetic Cubans in Muy Divertido! "very entertaining". While there are once again a few songs penned by Rodriguez, there's also a greater variety of composers represented, including three Ribot originals. Ribot's angular, visceral guitar style adds rock drive and avant-garde edge to these deep Latin grooves, and Anthony Coleman's spacy organ work adds a playfully strange texture to some tracks. Overall, it's a worthy follow-up for anyone who enjoyed the first installment.
