Perfect for asthmatic children aged five to eight and for newly diagnosed children, My Asthma Book is an upbeat story by author Maria Muirhead, a certified asthma educator.
Katie has just discovered that she has asthma. The thought of using an inhaler, or puffer, makes her nervous and more than a little upset. But she has been so tired lately, and she worries that she will not be able to do all the things she loves because of her condition. She decides to talk to her older brother, Rian, who has managed his asthma for two years. In a delightful conversation, Katie and Rian talk about asthma and its triggers and discuss their fears and questions about the disease.
Drawing on her extensive experience with asthma education, Muirhead gently assures children that although their asthma cannot be cured, it can be controlled. The activity section of My Asthma Book includes connect-the-dots, puzzles, word searches, and coloring activities with a focus on education. By explaining key concepts in asthma management and providing children with age-appropriate activities, kids who suffer from the disease will understand how asthma works and how they can continue to live normal, healthy lives.

I love this great book. I love the great illustrations. They are done by kids, and kids learn from kids! I have asthma and I learned so much from this book.
My children loved this book. They liked the fact that they could color the pictures and include their own drawings to match Katie and Rian's. What I liked most about this book was the homemade feel that it had. I wanted something written by a certified asthma educator without all standard professional glossy look. The 'stutter' in this book made it more real for my kids who have seen drawings of the lungs far too many times and are bored with the concept. The explanation that the author gave in this book held more meaning and was more interesting to my kids than any glossy book I brought home from the doctor's office. We loved it!!
The content of the book was good, but it would have been helpful if I had known before hand that the author's children illustrated the book and some of the 'asthma activities.' Despite the colorful cover of the book the inside is completely black and white. Many children are visual learners and really benefit from being able to see professional drawings of the lungs and how asthma affects the lungs.
