My Baby and Me

Overview

A NATURAL FOLLOW-UP to parent-baby bonding seen in You and Me, Baby!, Lynn Reiser and Penny Gentieu’s new concept book focuses on sibling bonding of the two-to-four year old with the new baby in the family. Told in the voice of the “big” brother or sister, close-up photos show the two siblings together doing what each does best, such as drinking from bottle versus from a cup, or giving a toothless gummy smile versus a big toothy grin. It’s a nice mix of diverse children of both genders. Here is an upbeat book ...

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Beautiful photographs of children fill every spread. Two copper-headed kids are facing each other in the opening spread with the older one asking—"Hey little baby! What can you do?" Then we find out that he can smile and so can his big sister; he can crawl, but she can go much faster. Then there is another pair—an older boy and his baby sister. She bounces and he hops; she drops things and he picks them up. They also have their own stuffed animals: a bunny for her and a bear for him. The next pair is an Asian girl and her older brother. He makes it very clear that the chair is his and the car seat is hers (although he looks as if he should still be riding in a car seat.) They each have something to drink and while she is still using a bottle, he uses a cup and is even able to pour from a larger bottle of juice. In their final scene together, they share a book. The last pair is playing together, and it ends with a big sister giving her little brother a really big hug. The ethnic groups and the wonderful relations between siblings make this a delightful book to have in a home. It is an extremely positive and probably idealized message, but there is nothing wrong with that. Parents may enjoy this book more than children. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

PreS-K

Bright and engaging photographs feature four toddler/baby sibling duos. The pairs show a diverse mix of boys and girls in action-smiling, moving, playing-described from the perspective of the toddlers. Every page turn demonstrates a notable advantage to being the older sibling: "You can crawl?/Watch me go./I go fast-/You go slow!" This book works on several levels. Babies will love seeing the photographs of other babies. Older siblings will relish the positive reinforcement about their birth order. And beginning readers will find the text easy to conquer. An enjoyable and useful purchase.-Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA

Kirkus Reviews
Reiser and Gentieu's collaboration is perfectly pitched to enchant toddlers and babies. "I can read. / Here's my book. / I can show you. / Look, look, look!" Delivered with all the sassy bravado of a newly minted older sibling, Reiser's simple, rhyming text offers toddlers confirmation of their inherent superiority over their infant siblings, while neatly interjecting subtle evidence of tender affection. The cheery offering culminates with the celebration of one thing infants and toddlers can do together-hug. Gentieu's crisp photographs of multicultural infant/toddler sibling pairs are the real focus. Sliding between extreme close-ups of the children's faces and broader perspectives, the subjects appear against monochromatic backgrounds. Such simplicity adeptly keeps readers' attention attuned to the nuances of expression between siblings. Babies will enjoy the bright photos while toddlers will savor their moments of triumph.
