Overview

Ida May finally fits in at school after becoming best friends with Stacey Merriweather, one of the popular girls. But then Ida's frenemy, bossy Jenna Drews, brings in a game of truth or dare, and all the girls are suddenly daring one another to misbehave. When Ida finds herself in the principal's office, she ends up ratting out her friends-with disastrous consequences. The only way she can fix things is to take a triple-dog dare, but Ida May isn't sure she has the guts. Will her BFF come to her rescue, or is this the perfect job for a frenemy?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Christine Cassello
Ida May is nine years old, almost ten, and losing her best friend. Stacy Merriweather has been spending more time with Brooke Morgan than with her and Brooke is calling Stacy her BFF. Brooke, the prettiest and loudest girl in the class used to be best friends with Jenna Drews, but they are not on good terms any longer and trade insults with one another. Since their break up, Jenna is left out of the pairs of kids at school and Ida lets Jenna work with Stacey and her. When Ida causes a disturbance in the school lunchroom and is questioned about it, she tells the principal that the girls were playing a game called Truth or Dare and all of them get into trouble. Jenna does not avoid Ida as the other girls do. When they want to punish her by giving her a really serious triple dare to perform, Jenna takes her side. Ida realizes that she has more in common with Jenna than with Stacey and although Jenna says she does not want to be anyone's best friend after what Brooke did to her, Ida calls her a best "frenemy." This book will encourage young girls to think about what makes a friend and who their friends really are. Ida tells the story about the relationships of her fourth grade class in her thoughts and journal writings. She also draws a picture of her class and names the students and teacher. That illustration, by Jana Christy, appears on the inside of the front and back cover. This is book three in the "Friends for Keeps" series. Other titles of the series include, My Last Best Friend (Book 1) and My New Best Friend (Book 2) are mentioned on the back of the book. The fourth title is My Forever Friends. Reviewer: Christine Cassello
School Library Journal
Gr 3–5—Fourth-grader Ida May is precariously poised between wanting to be herself—an artist who follows the rules and loves her sock monkey—and wanting to be accepted by her more sophisticated peers who are into makeup and fashion. Then, a game of truth or dare causes her best friend to turn against her, and everything changes. It falls to frenemy Jenna to remind her that standing up for yourself is braver than going along with the crowd. Like Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Abrams), My Best Frenemy emphasizes the conflict between wanting to do the right thing and wanting to earn popularity. Written in descriptive language ("Her words were covered in prickles") that sets the scene and gives readers insight into Ida's confusion and growth, the story is realistic and well told.—Wendy E.
