Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
First published in 1999, My Big Dog by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel, illus. by Stevens, presents a tale narrated by Merl the cat, who explains that in her "pur-r-r-r-fect house, everything is mine!" But when a puppy joins the household, she goes in search of a new home-until she adopts the interloper as "my big dog." Close-up portraits emphasize the pooch's affectionate invasiveness. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Friendships are sometimes formed in the most unlikely ways by total opposites. The two main characters in this colorful book are Merl, a very special cat, and a new member of the family, a big yellow puppy. Like any new member of the family, the puppy is somewhat awkward learning how to fit in. Merl has been with the family for a long time and everything and everyone belonged to Merl. The authors have teamed up to create a delightful picture book about how rewarding it can be when we make new friends and make room for them in "our" space. This title will be a good message for the arrival of a new baby in the family or perhaps even in the classroom as new students have trouble fitting in. The illustrations are brilliant and inviting and the story carries a heartwarming message. A great read. 2005, Golden Books of Random House, Ages 2 to 5.
—Joe Ann Hinrichs

    GREAT Book

I teach second grade. This book was WONDERFUL for making predictions based on the cover...a CAT is the one telling the story. It is also great for telling a story from someone else's point of view. The theme of friendship is strong through the book as the cat learns to love this dog. I even read it to my husband and he roared with laughter at the "attitude" of the cat in both voice and illustration. My second graders were totally captivated by the story. Would even be good for older elementary students as they can examine the story more in depth. A wonderful book..I highly suggest you add it to your library.

A Book for Cat People AND Dog People

This book is written in first person (or maybe I should say first cat)and the co-authors have obviously owned both cats and dogs. Merl, the very special cat, conveys beautifully the quirky attitude of a cat. The illustrations are even drawn from the view of a cat or dog, as in frequently close to the ground. I liked this book so much that I've bought five copies of it, sent them to all my nieces and nephews, and kept one copy for myself. For those of you searching for a children's book that teaches something positive about relationships, this book would certainly fill that need. But I'm a cat person and I preferred to read it just for pure enjoyment. It's a 'purr-fect' book!
