Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Bathtime turns maritime, as a girl dreams of sailing the wide ocean. PW called this lilting tale "cozy enough for landlubbers, with sufficient adventure for incipient sailors." Ages 3-8. (Apr.)
Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
A young girl plays with her toy boat in the bath, and her fantasies take her sailing out past the harbor into the open sea. Watercolors perfectly reflect the soothing blues and greens of the ocean and the changing hues of the sky as the day passes. The text is brief and lulling-a perfect bedtime read.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A young girl journeys by way of the bathtub into unfamiliar waters, crosses the sea, and sails back home again. The large, bold type describes the action as she glides over swells, through the channel, and drifts back toward a beacon, giving children an opportunity to learn some new vocabulary. This is an appealing lap book that youngsters may enjoy poring over. The expansive illustrations, done in bright watercolor and india ink, flow with the movement of the simple story line. The paintings display the beauty of an everchanging sky and sea as they change from dawn to dusk. While My Blue Boat is an enjoyable fantasy, the brilliant illustrations deserve a more substantial story to draw children into the adventure that's going on in the pages.-Kathy Mitchell, Gadsden Co. Public Library, Quincy, FL
Ilene Cooper
A child's fantasy of sailing off isn't new, but Demarest does it with panache. A young girl sits in the bathtub with her blue boat, but soon she's on a make-believe voyage through unchartered waters, frolicking with dolphins and steering through storms to find the stars. The text is lyrically direct, but it is the art that really makes the book soar. The oversize, childlike watercolors, which veer from energetic to dreamy as the story demands, are always pulsing with life. Plenty for little ones to look at--tucked in bed or at library story hours.
