Overview

A powerful collection of novellas by four leading African-American women writers, each tackling the terror of domestic violence.

In Other People’s Skin, Tracy Price-Thompson and TaRessa Stovall, along with writers Elizabeth Atkins and Desiree Cooper, took on intra-racial prejudice. The second book in their successful Sister4Sister Empowerment Series once again offers hope and healing, this time from the nightmare of abuse.

In Desiree Cooper’s Breakin’ It Down, a highly successful talk show host, haunted by the abandonment and self-loathing she felt as a child, is shocked to find herself inflicting the same abuse she experienced on her seven-year-old daughter. Tracy Price-Thompson’s Brotherly Love goes deep into the disturbing relationship between a beautiful, accomplished teenage girl and the seemingly dutiful brother who raised her after their parents’ death. TaRessa Stovall’s Breakin’ Dishes reveals the turmoil behind the scenes of a picture-perfect marriage as an angry wife beats her cheating husband. And in Elizabeth Atkins’s The Wrong Side of Mr. Right, an outwardly beaming bride-to-be comes to terms with the inner turmoil brought on by her emotionally abusive fiancé. In all four novellas, redemption and hope appear when a pair of blue suede shoes enters each woman’s life, helping her to overcome her challenges and stop the cycle of abuse.

A raw, engaging, and enlightening collection from beginning to end, My Blue Suede Shoes is as informative as it is entertaining.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The titular footwear connects these overtly inspiring tales of African-American women recovering from domestic violence in the latest effort from Price-Thompson. Desiree Cooper's opener, "Breakin' It Down," features a pair of blue suede tennis shoes that help TV host "CC" Smart, a Norfolk, Va. single mom, face the consequences of putting her career over the needs of her daughter. In Price-Thompson's "Brotherly Love," a social worker gives a pair of slingbacks to an abused teen who has aborted her baby. Stilettos become a good luck charm for an Atlanta TV news anchor accused of trying to kill her husband and his pregnant girlfriend in Stovall's "Breakin' Dishes." And Elizabeth Atkins's "The Wrong Side of Mr. Right" hits a profound closing note when a pair of old Jamaican wedding slippers inspire a woman to face the reality of her abusive Prince Charming. The perfunctory prose of all involved disappoints, but their accumulated efforts and shared subjects matter makes for a moving collection. (Mar.)

Kirkus Reviews
Four different writers introduce strong African-American women who are forced to deal with their own variations of domestic violence.

Despite of their affluence and confidence, the featured characters in this set of four novellas all struggle with insecurity and denial connected to abusive relationships. CC Smart, the popular TV talk-show host in the opener, "Breakin' It Down," is herself a survivor of childhood trauma. Her drug-addict mother Lola abandoned her when she was 10, and she is in danger of repeating the cycle of pain by neglecting her own adopted child, Alizé. "Brotherly Love," the most harrowing episode, explores the relationship between Regina Wilson, a beleaguered young social worker, and Zana Williams, a gifted teenager. Zana's attempt to end her own unwanted pregnancy nearly kills her, while leaving her tougher-than-thou attitude in tact. Using her professional skills, Regina slowly breaks down the girl's considerable emotional defenses, uncovering a family history that is no less horrifying for being obvious. "Breakin' Dishes"chucks gender stereotypes out the window as Emmy-nominated TV newscaster Monique Worthington enacts her personal rage issues out on her philandering husband, Armstrong. Denying that she has a problem (even doing on-air stories about domestic abuse), Monique has her own moment of clarity (and consequence) after a run-in with a woman claiming to have an intimate relationship with her man. Psychological violence rears its ugly head in "The Wrong Side of Mr. Right." Charmaigne Carson, a successful Detroit lawyer, is engaged to Marcus, a handsome, self-made millionaire who calls her his "princess." Even though his controlling side emerges a few weeks into their whirlwind courtship, she ignores her own intuition about his true nature. It takes everything she has, including a bit of metaphysical assistance from some very special footwear, to walk away from this toxic dreamboat who is indeed too good to be true. Like all the heroines in this well-meaning collection, taking charge of her life is the key to finding peace, maybe even happiness.

Sober cautionary tales of smart women making bad choices.

EDITORS’ NOTE

It shouldn’t hurt to be a woman, and as sisters in this great country, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that our daughters and sons know this statement to be absolutely true. Violence and abuse manifest themselves in a myriad of ways, and there isn’t always a raging red flag to alert us that someone we know or love might be in pending danger.

My Blue Suede Shoes seeks to shed light on various forms of abuse in relationships and to heal these hurts by focusing on the root cause of the abuser’s behavior and having him or her take responsibility for instituting the necessary self-change.

Whether it be child abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or emotional abuse, domestic violence in any of its many manifestations is simply wrong, and as a people we must acknowledge it when we detect it in our communities and then take active steps to assist the victims in obtaining the help they need to remove themselves from relationships that cause them harm.

But help mustn’t only be provided for the victims of abuse. Many cases of domestic violence are perpetrated by those who have also been abused themselves. Causing pain to others thus becomes a vicious cycle, one that is difficult to break without intervention and assistance.

In this second volume of our Sister-4-Sister Empowerment Series, we not only seek to illustrate various aspects of domestic violence and abuse, we also strive to understand the motives behind the behavior and to find methods of eliminating the abuser’s need to inflict pain on others. It is our hope that the stories we’ve penned for this important volume of fiction are eye-opening and thought provoking in ways that are beneficial to you in your daily life.

So, as you go about your lives, may each of you place an arm of protection around your sisters and brothers in need, while praying for them the same safety, comfort, happiness, and protection that you seek for yourselves. May you be blessed with the utmost peace and balance, and as you navigate the harrowing roads to self-awareness and determination with CC, Zana, Charmaigne, and Monique . . . please . . . if you run across a sister who’s in trouble, don’t turn your back on her. Empower her! Be a Sister 4 your Sister. Share a copy of this book, and give her a pair of blue suede shoes.

Peace and balance, Tracy and TaRessa

Rushing out to meet Hester and Cas, the three of them starting the walk to the Delta house. Hester and Mary talked excitedly, gossiping about who was to be there. "I heard Dean Winchester was supposed to show up!" She said, raising her filled-in eyebrows. "Who invited him? Lisa?" Mary tilted her head. "I thought they broke up?"

LOVE YOURSELF WHAT A TERRIFIC BOOK!!!!! I AGREE WITH THE EDITO

    LOVE YOURSELF

WHAT A TERRIFIC BOOK!!!!! I AGREE WITH THE EDITOR'S NOTE, NO IT SHOULD NOT HURT TO BE A WOMAN. GOD CREATED WOMAN FROM MAN, FOR MAN. TO BE HIS HELP MEET, NOT HIS PUNCHING BAG. ALL WOMEN EVERYWHERE NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK AND THEN PASS IT ON.

EACH AUTHOR PAINTED A DIFFERENT AND HEARTFELT STORY OF ABUSE. WHAT I REALLY LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK WAS IT WAS ABLE TO LET YOU SEE SOME OF THE MANY WAYS ABUSE CAN BE USED. WHETHER THE ABUSER IS A WOMAN OR A MAN, IF WE SEE OR KNOW THAT IT IS HAPPENING, WE MUST DO OUR PART TO HELP STOP IT.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL WOMEN. IT IS TRULY AN EYE OPENER. ENJOY........ .

Tracy, TaRessa...you have heightened awareness of abuse on many levels...Thank you Sisters4Sisters, another must read!

The novellas are heart felt and heart breaking...I finsihed reading in two days!! Abuse has no respect of person and neither does the abuser, Ci-Ci and Zana bared witness to that. What can make you laugh can make you cry...I did! Many of us are in denial of abuse and are in desperate need of our very own Blue Suede Shoes. Thank you ladies...a perfect fit!
