Meet the Author

Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) was an American former slave, abolitionist, and writer. Born into slavery in Maryland, Douglass escaped in 1838 by posing as a free black sailor, eventually marrying and settling in Massachusetts. He became an outspoken opponent of slavery, speaking out and writing on the evils of the South's "peculiar institution." His skill in oratory and his persuasive autobiographies helped shape public opinion in the North against slavery.
