Overview

The former First Lady of New York writes of her reunion and subsequent marriage to her high school sweetheart, more than thirty years after their breakup, and chronicles dozens of similar reunions among couples nationwide in what experts call a twenty-first-century relationship trend. Poignant and heartwarming, My Boyfriend's Back captures the love story of former high school sweethearts Ed Oster and Donna Hanover-journalist, actress, and First Lady of the City of New York from 1994 to 2001-who, more than thirty years after their breakup at Stanford, reconnected, rekindled their love, and married, becoming part of what experts are calling a "twenty-first-century trend" in relationships. Exploring the myriad ways rekindled love is different from new love and why so many couples are reuniting now, Hanover also details the role of the Internet in this trend, and offers some recommendations-and some warnings-for aspiring "reunitees." Accompanied by a wide array of other couples' stories from across the country-including celebrities Carol Channing, Suzanne Pleshette and Tom Poston, Nicole Miller, Liza Huber, and others-who have also rediscovered their early loves later in life and are building committed lives together, this book combines expert advice and inspiring anecdotes to help readers reconnect with past loves. Whether it's Googling an ex-boyfriend or attending a class reunion, My Boyfriend's Back encourages readers to find out whatever happened to the ex they can't forget; it is the book single, widowed, and divorced romantics everywhere have been waiting for.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Combining the personal stories of reunited couples with the insights of psychologists and relationship experts, My Boyfriend's Back is a light and optimistic look at what makes these relationships work the second time around. Hanover, a journalist and actor, divorced former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani in 2002 and is now happily married to her high school sweetheart, Ed Oster. Here she relates her personal story of romance and reunion, as well as those of other couples who rekindled youthful relationships later in life. For those looking for a realistic, in-depth, and well-rounded look at the emotional intricacies of what makes these relationships work (or not), this audiobook disappoints. The sentiments here are those of sugar-coated optimism, and the individual tales are primarily told in the gushing and sometimes clich d language of the couples interviewed. While many listeners will enjoy these sweet love stories, this program will not appeal to those who find a fairy tale approach to love and relationships difficult to swallow. Recommended for public libraries where romance and self-help books are popular.-Dawn Eckenrode, Daniel A. Reed Lib., SUNY at Fredonia Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Young Eyes

Stories like mine and Ed's and [others] inspire some intriguing questions:

  • What is the phenomenon that allows us to overlook what some might view as imperfections and see our rekindled love partners as beautiful and youthful no matter what their age?
  • Why do reunited sweethearts look at each other through young, optimistic eyes?
  • Why don't these guys see our cellulite?

Carl Jung probably wasn't thinking of "dimpled-thigh anxiety" when he wrote his celebrated book Memories, Dreams, Reflections, but he did express some insight that helps us understand the concept of seeing the world -- or one's sweetheart -- through young eyes: "[a] childhood memory can suddenly take possession of consciousness with so lively an emotion that we feel wholly transported back to the original situation."

This can be a great benefit of reuniting with an old boyfriend or girlfriend. He looks as handsome to you as he did the night of the senior prom. You look as fresh and lovely to him as you did on your Sweet Sixteen birthday. And this makes both of you feel remarkably young again.

Reunited couples that we'll meet in these pages express it best:

Arnold Spitz was 88 and Millie was 72 when they reunited. They married in 2003. He says, "When I picked her up in front of her store after more than 50 years apart, I saw her as she was at 17. She's beautiful and I feel young again."

Tom Anton says of his wife, Sandi: "Even more than 20 years later, I see that 15-year-old girl. The bounce is still there, and so is her love of life."

Linda Hart, 50, says of her partner, Ken Kohn, 51: "When I look at him, I flash back to when we were young, and that's what I see in him now."

Such feelings are understandable, says Dr. Herb Barrett. "When you meet new friends, the face they encounter is that of the 45- or 55- or 65-year-old person, with all the experiences and wrinkles. In a reencounter with an old friend we very quickly get back to how we thought as kids."

The quest to recapture youth is practically eternal, and the ways in which people pursue it aren't always terribly productive. Some go through the old "midlife crisis," including a fast car and much younger trophy spouse. Others opt for new noses, chins, or breasts. But rekindling a past love can be a far more exhilarating way to drink from the fountain of youth.
