Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Eight-year-old Joey comes home to find the house all to himself—an exciting and scary concept to him. But he knows how to deal with any potential monsters inside by calling out into each shadowy room, "My brother Dan will be home soon; my brother Dan's Delicious!" Although sharp eyes can find possible monsters within the pages, such as wall portraits that seem to stare at Joey and mirrors with shadowy figures, the story itself will reassure the audience that all a monster needs is a mouth-watering distraction; like a tasty older brother. The soft evening colors in each full-page drawing throughout the book will lure children to sleep, as this is a perfect bedtime story to spark imaginations. The vocabulary used, while it appropriately fits the character's personality, may be a little advanced for its intended audience—another reason this book is great for reading to a child. 2003, Pelican Publishing Company, Ages 6 to 8.
— Cherie Ilg Haas
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-Joey, a member of the gifted-and-talented class at Horace E. Depworth Elementary School, comes home to find a note from his parents saying they are visiting neighbors and that his older brother is at the movies. Not made of the stern stuff of genuine nerd-heroes such as Alistair in Marilyn Sadler's Alistair in Outer Space (S & S, 1984), the eight-year-old immediately assumes that monsters have been waiting for just such a moment. Not to fear, though: "-I would simply alert him to the existence of my older, larger, tastier brother Dan! There are times when sacrifice is the only way. I would miss him, but he does have the bigger bedroom." This derivative story lacks both humor and an audience, and Galey's humorous drawings do not elevate the tale above the mundane. Stick with the "Three Billy Goats Gruff" or Mercer Mayer's charming bedroom monster in There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Puffin, 1992). Children old enough to understand what a gifted-and-talented class is would find this tale completely unpalatable.-Kathleen Whalin, York Public Library, ME Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
