Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-- What kind of snapshots would a child take on an expedition to an aquarium? Using this idea as a premise, Marshall proceeds to engage viewers in a game using illustrations rather than actual photographs. Readers first see a brightly hued unidentifiable object; upon turning the page they see that it is a small segment of a larger picture, and the animal becomes apparent. The text does not provide the creatures' names, for that, too, is part of the game. The end pages are in reality a map, or, in a manner of speaking, an index, for by tracing the footprints around the sea world and flipping back and forth, children can identify the creatures depicted. The illustrations have a pared-down, childlike simplicity, with colors that are intense and vivid. This type of book has been done successfully with photographs; here it works with equal success through imaginative illustrations. --Phyllis G. Sidorsky, National Cathedral School, Washington, DC
