PreS-- Bold, graphic paintings in bright, primary colors provide an eye-catching trip through the zoo. From the shadow image of the narrator within the camera lens of the title page to the colorful sneaker prints at the end, Marshall's illustrations pull readers through the book. The simple guessing game format shows part of an animal--ears, mouth, stripes, pattern--on one page, and the whole when the page is turned. The large, simple illustrations are highlighted with backgrounds of blue, black, white, or green. Large-print text is alternately black on white and white on black on facing pages. Endpapers boast a simple map showing the path taken through the zoo, with animals' names clearly labelled. Here is a short, simple book to use with two and three year olds before a visit to the zoo. Pair it with Tana Hoban's A Children's Zoo (Greenwillow, 1985) and Eve Rice's Sam Who Never Forgets (Greenwillow, 1977). --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, Ohio
